“I can respect that,” Merc said with a bob of his head. “So what does this mean for the little one?” he asked, pointing to her stomach.

“Now that, I don’t know.” Aries sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. “From the looks of it, he’s leaving for good. I don’t know if he plans to be here for the baby or not.”

Her eyes watered and head hung. This time, I didn’t have to tell Merc to go and comfort her, because he did it on his own.

“I’m sorry, Aries. For real. I wanted shit to get better, but I didn’t want him to break your heart. I just… knew you deserved better than what he was offering and didn’t want you to settle or put my son in an environment that wasn’t healthy.” He paused. “You don’t have to worry about what he does. Whether he’s present or not, I’ll be here for you and the baby. You can still stay here until you find a man that’s truly worthy of you and can provide you with the lifestyle that you and my son are used to getting from me.”

“Thank you,” she whimpered, hugging him tightly.

When he kissed her temple, the gesture made my eyes water. Merc was truly a standup guy, and I’d never be able to deny that. The longer they embraced, the more uncomfortable I felt. I knew Merc said there was nothing romantic between them, but my trauma was far too recent. The wound was still open, and thinking about something developing between them had my heart hurting already. This was exactly what I wanted to avoid.

Quietly, I stood and headed to Merc’s room to request an Uber since he’d picked me up from my parents’ home. I wasn’t sure what would happen between us in the future, but I knew for right now, his hands were too full juggling his family, and I didn’t know if that family would fit me.
