I knew there was no talking her out of this, so I nodded my agreement. “Aight, Aries. Let me at least pay your rent up for the first year so you can adjust comfortably.”
“I can agree to that.”
“I don’t want y’all to go far.”
“We won’t. I won’t be able to afford a house in your neighborhood, but I’ve been looking at apartments that are out this way, so he won’t have to change schools.”
“Or… you can let me buy you a house out this way, so you won’t have to worry about rent or your mortgage. And this way, I won’t have to worry about if you’ll be able to take care of the kids.” She didn’t answer right away, and I appreciated that she was considering it. “You can pay the rest of your bills, and we can come up with a monthly amount that I’ll give you for child support. But let me gift you with a home on behalf of my son and his baby brother or sister.”
She released a shaky breath. “I’m too emotional for you to be saying things to make me cry.”
As she caught her tears, I laughed and put some space between us. “Is that a yes?”
“Yes, it’s a yes.”
“Good. Thank you for letting me do this, and for doing what you think is best for me.”
“Always.”
“Okay, Mommy. I choose these ones!” Marz came bolting into the room with his favorite pair of Batman pajamas.
“I don’t know why I even asked. I knew you were going to pick those,” she said, scooping him up and placing kisses all over his face.
Even if Aries temporarily lost herself with Omar, I’d never deny that she was a great mom. I didn’t mind going above and beyond for her because of how hard she went for our son.
