One night, Aaron woke up to a noise. He opened his eyes and noticed a faint light glowing from beneath the door. He shuffled over, peering out. Standing in the doorway was a figure, his captor, carrying a box of groceries.
For a moment, their eyes met, and Aaron could see satisfaction in the man's gaze, like an artist admiring his finished work. Aaron didn't feel the urge to shout or fight. He simply nodded in acknowledgment.
As the man closed the door, Aaron sat back down, letting himself sink into the couch with a contented sigh. He didn't know how long he'd been here or how much longer he would stay. But as he lay back down, snacking in hand, he felt a strange acceptance wash over him.
He was home.
