RUSHING FROM the cloudy skies was rain. Relentless and unforgiving, submerging everything in sight and turning the campus into shallow rivers. Although the rainy weather was therapeutic to some, it was everything but therapeutic to the young woman, Beyoncé Knowles.

She absolutely hated the rain.

She had been looking forward to her first day at the University of Houston, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement, but nothing had prepared her for this unpredicted rainstorm. Cold raindrops pelted her as she tried to carry her book bag, her notebooks, and the remains of her umbrella that had turned inside out.

Beyoncé's clothes were thoroughly soaked, clinging to her skin, and the water trickled from her curly hair, streaming down her face. The feeling of distress streamed through her veins like no other as she glanced at her phone once more, hoping that time had somehow slowed down in her favor, but the radiant screen showed her worst fear she was officially late. The lecture had already started, and Beyoncé was still a good five minutes from the building.

"Perfect," she muttered under her breath, dodging puddles and weaving through the crowded walkway as students hurried past her. This was not how she'd wanted her first day to go, but there was a sense of relief in knowing that she wasn't the only person who was rushing to get to class.

Fresh from a small town overseas, Beyoncé had come to the University ready to make an impression, to show everyone that she was more than committed, focused, and capable of keeping up with the academic challenges that lay ahead of her. Instead, Beyoncé was starting off her year running anxiously across the campus in the rain, extremely wet, and behind schedule.

By the time Beyoncé reached the lecture hall, her heart was pounding in her chest. She could feel her wet clothes sticking uncomfortably to her skin. Her Dr. Martens squeaked against the linoleum floor as she braced herself and pushed open the heavy door, hoping to slip in unnoticed. As soon as the young woman entered, a quiet stillness fell over the large room. She instantly paused, feeling the weight of dozens of eyes turning towards her. The silence was so loud, thick with an unspoken reprimand.

She felt a rush of embarrassment.

Beyoncé took a slow deep breath, avoiding looking at anyone directly as she pressed her notebooks to her chest and quickly shambled to an empty seat in the middle row. But even as she hopelessly tried to blend in, she felt eyes on her a sharp and unwavering gaze that made her skin prickle. With reluctance, Beyoncé looked up and found herself meeting the eyes of Ms. Maraj.
