Levi sat quietly in the corner of the mess hall, his piercing gaze scanning the crowded room. The usual clatter of utensils and the hum of conversations filled the morning air but there was an unsettling void where Abigail's presence should have been. It had been a week since the incident with Erwin--the moment Levi's fury nearly led him to commit an unforgivable act. After that night, in the days followed, he had become acutely aware of the silver head's absence, particularly during mealtime, where her tranquility often mingled with the chaotic demeanor of her comrades.
It felt as though an invisible wall had been erected between them, one that became more pronounced with each passing day. He clearly understood it; she was purposely avoiding him, avoiding everyone. He tried to meet her at night, the kitchen-lounge where she used to spend countless time but much to his disappointment, she had not been there. The only traces of her were the whispers of the air, moonlight, empty cups and the faint scent of tea and her cologne.
"Levi?" Furlan's voice broke through his thoughts. With furrowed eyebrows, he called again, concern etched across his features.
"You seemed lost. What's got you down?"
Levi's expression remained impasssive but internally he felt a stir or emotion.
"It's about her." He replied honestly, referring to the silver head as the name felt heavy and foreign on his tongue to utter.
"She hasn't been around. It's bothering me." He muttered honestly. Furlan nodded knowingly, his eyes glancing towards the mess hall door as if expecting Abigail to walk through it at any time with her calm reverie, like the first time they saw her.
"I noticed. And I think it's because of us..... of you, you know. It seems like she's taking it very personally." He played with his spoon, stirring the thin soup.
"I want to thank her for helping us during the mission. She did take a risk to save me."
A knot formed in Levi's stomach at the thought.
"I'll.... I'll try to talk to her." He muttered, an uncharacteristic sense of resolve in his voice.
However, he realized he needed help tracking her down. He did not particularly relish the prospect of speaking with the bespectacled latter; her exuberance and relentless energy often grated on his patience. Yet, he knew only they could tell him about her whereabouts.
In the afternoon, after only a short search, he found Hange in a small chamber, her lab. As he stepped into the dimly lit room, the faint scent of chemical, herbs and academic fervor enveloped him. He glared at the chaotic assortment of books, papers and glassware strewn across the sterile surfaces. Despite the disarray, Hange's presence radiated an unmistakable energy, one that often seemed to ignite a spark in anyone who entered, the total opposite of Abigail. Yet, to Levi, that energy was a nuisance.
