Mid-Wilshire Station—The Next Morning
Lucy walks into the station, her nerves simmering beneath her calm exterior. It feels surreal, stepping back into work knowing that everyone now knows about her daughter. She's been Lucy Chen, police officer and UC, for so long. But now, she's Lucy Chen—mother. The difference weighs on her, making her steps feel heavier as she walks through the familiar halls.
She glances around, catching the curious looks from some of her colleagues, their gazes softened with a mixture of understanding and sympathy. The whispers are unavoidable, but she holds her head high, determined not to let her new reality affect her work.
Just as she's about to head to her desk, Tim spots her from across the bullpen and makes his way over. His expression is unreadable, but there's a softness in his eyes that Lucy can't ignore.
Tim Bradford: (crossing his arms, a small smile tugging at his lips)
"So, back in one piece, huh?"Lucy Chen: (nodding, her own smile appearing)
"Yeah. Feels... strange. Like a new chapter I didn't plan for."Tim chuckles softly, nodding in agreement.
Tim Bradford:
"Well, I'm glad you're here. And... I hope you know you're not facing this alone anymore."Lucy's expression softens, grateful for Tim's unspoken support. She nods, her eyes reflecting a hint of vulnerability.
Lucy Chen:
"I know. Thanks, Tim."Just then, Angela Lopez approaches, her usual fierce energy tempered by genuine warmth. Behind her is Sergeant Grey, looking as collected as ever, though there's a subtle respect in his gaze.
Angela Lopez: (grinning)
"Welcome back, Chen. You didn't think we'd let you skip out on all the paperwork, did you?"Lucy Chen: (rolling her eyes, laughing)
"I was hoping you'd have a little sympathy."Angela Lopez:
"Sympathy? Nah, I'll give you some of mine, though. My little one's a handful, and I don't even have half the risks you deal with."Lucy chuckles, appreciating the solidarity. Sergeant Grey steps forward, clearing his throat slightly.
Sergeant Grey:
"Chen, I know yesterday wasn't easy for you—or any of us. But let me be clear: we've got your back, both as your team and as your family here."Lucy nods, feeling a wave of gratitude wash over her.
Lucy Chen:
"Thank you, sir. That means a lot."As Grey walks back to his office, Angela gives Lucy a light pat on the shoulder before heading to her desk. Tim lingers, watching Lucy as she settles in, pulling up files and notes for the day's cases. He leans against her desk, his expression thoughtful.
Tim Bradford:
"So, have you thought about how this changes things? Being a cop and... everything else?"Lucy glances up at him, a faint smile playing at her lips.
Lucy Chen:
"I think it's going to be messy and probably a little scary. But I want Grace to see that her mom is strong, that I'm here for her and still doing what I love."Tim nods, respecting her resolve. He knows better than anyone that the challenges won't end just because the secret is out. But he can see the determination in Lucy's eyes, the strength she's always had now channeled into something greater than just herself.
Tim Bradford:
"Well, you know I'll be here to remind you of that strength. Even on the days you forget it yourself."Lucy smiles, feeling the comfort of Tim's support once more. Just as they're talking, Nyla Harper and Aaron Thorsen approach, carrying files and looking eager to dive into the latest case.
Nyla Harper: (smirking)
"Chen, are you going to sit around all day, or are you ready to get back to work?"Aaron Thorsen: (grinning)
"Yeah, because we can't keep up without you."Lucy laughs, feeling the warm camaraderie of her team around her. For the first time, she truly believes that they'll all stand beside her—not just as fellow cops but as family.
Lucy Chen: (grinning)
"Alright, let's get to it. I'm ready."As the day unfolds, Lucy immerses herself in the rhythm of the job, tackling cases, following leads, and debriefing with her team. But now, there's a difference—a lightness that wasn't there before. She's no longer hiding, no longer bearing the weight of her secret alone.
By the end of the shift, she feels exhausted but in a good way. She gathers her things, ready to head home to Grace. Just as she's about to leave, Tim catches up to her, an amused smile on his face.
Tim Bradford:
"Heading home?"Lucy Chen: (smiling)
"Yeah. I promised Grace I'd be back early tonight. We're having a 'just us' dinner."Tim Bradford: (nodding, genuinely pleased)
"That sounds nice. Go enjoy it. We'll see you tomorrow, Chen."Lucy gives him a grateful nod before turning to leave. As she steps outside, she feels a sense of peace and strength that she hasn't felt in a long time. She knows this is only the beginning of a new balance between her life as a cop and as a mother, but she's ready for it.
Walking to her car, Lucy takes a deep breath, the city lights shining around her as she heads home, a new sense of purpose guiding her way forward.
