Chapter 15: The Breaking Point

The next few days blur together for Lucy. Between her ongoing work with Royce's operation and the stress of balancing her responsibilities as a mother, everything starts to feel like it's slipping through her fingers. Grace is on her mind constantly, and though Lucy tries to keep her emotions in check, there's a heaviness in her heart that won't go away.

One late afternoon, Lucy receives a call from the daycare. Her stomach drops when she sees the number on the screen. It's not unusual for them to call, but lately, it's been happening more often. Maybe it's just another question about Grace's activities or her behavior. But deep down, Lucy knows this is different.

Lucy Chen: (answering the phone, voice tight)
"Hello?"

Daycare Worker: (calm, but with a tone of concern)
"Hi, Officer Chen. This is Sarah from Grace's daycare. I'm afraid there's been an incident. Grace had a small fall and hurt her arm. We've called an ambulance just to be safe, but we thought we should let you know."

The world goes silent for a beat. Lucy's heart stops, her breath catching in her throat.

Lucy Chen: (voice shaking)
"What happened? Is she okay?"

Daycare Worker:
"It's nothing serious, but she's in pain. We think it's just a bruise, maybe a sprain, but we wanted to be sure. The ambulance is on the way now."

Lucy's mind races. This is all she's been afraid of—being far away from Grace when something goes wrong. She grips the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles turn white.

Lucy Chen: (quickly)
"I'm on my way. Don't let her out of your sight. I'll be there in five minutes."

The drive to the daycare feels like an eternity. Lucy's hands tremble on the wheel, her mind imagining the worst-case scenario. She tries to push the fear away, but it's overwhelming. The lights of the ambulance are flashing ahead of her as she pulls into the parking lot, the sight of them making her stomach twist in knots.

She runs inside, her eyes scanning the room frantically. The daycare workers are gathered near the hallway, and she spots Grace sitting on a small bench, her face pale but tear-free. A paramedic is gently checking her arm, but Grace is more concerned about the pink band-aid on her elbow than the injury itself.

Grace: (gently)
"Mommy, look! I got a band-aid!"

Relief floods Lucy's chest as she approaches her daughter. Grace's eyes light up when she sees her, and despite the tension still lingering in the air, Lucy can't help but smile at her daughter's infectious optimism.

Lucy Chen: (kneeling down to Grace's level)
"Hey, kiddo. You scared me there. Are you sure you're okay?"

Grace: (nodding)
"I'm okay, Mommy. It just hurts a little."

Lucy looks at the paramedic, who gives her a reassuring nod.

Paramedic:
"It's a sprain, but nothing too serious. We recommend a few days of rest and some ice, but she'll be just fine."

Lucy exhales deeply, her shoulders finally relaxing for the first time in what feels like days. She picks Grace up gently, cradling her in her arms as they head out to the car. As she walks, she can't help but feel a sense of guilt. She had been so consumed by her work, by the constant threat from Royce, that she hadn't been able to be there when Grace needed her most.

But right now, Grace is okay. And that's all that matters.

Later that night, back at home, Lucy sits on the couch, Grace nestled beside her. The day has been long, but as she watches her daughter play with her favorite stuffed animal, she feels a sense of peace she hasn't felt in days. The constant worry and fear haven't gone away, but at this moment, she can breathe.

There's a knock on the door. It's a soft tap, but Lucy's instincts are still on high alert. She hesitates for a moment before opening it, only to find Angela and Nyla standing on the other side, both of them looking concerned but determined.

Angela Lopez:
"We heard about Grace. How's she doing?"

Lucy Chen: (forcing a smile)
"She's fine. Just a little bruised, but nothing too serious. I'm just glad I was able to get there in time."

Nyla Harper: (grinning)
"Good. You've been through a lot these last few days. And we're all here for you. No matter what happens with Royce, we've got your back, Lucy."

Lucy feels a lump in her throat as she looks at her friends. She's been running on fumes for so long, trying to keep everything together, but in this moment, surrounded by her daughter and her friends, she realizes something important. She's not alone.

She smiles, truly smiles, for the first time in what feels like forever.

Lucy Chen:
"Thanks. I've got my daughter, and I've got all of you. I can handle anything."

The next day, Lucy returns to the station, her mind clear for the first time in days. Royce is still a looming threat, but she knows she's not facing it alone anymore. She has her team, her friends, and the most important thing—she has Grace.

As the day progresses, the usual tension and stress of the job fill the air, but Lucy is different. She's stronger now, more resilient. She knows that no matter how bad things get, there's always hope—always a way forward. And no matter what happens, she will never stop fighting for her daughter, for herself, and for the people she loves.

The past may try to catch up with her, but she's ready. Ready to face whatever comes next.

And this time, she won't be doing it alone.
