"I want to meet him," Momma says as she sets the dinner table up.
"Momma you already met Tweeder," I say. "You met him multiple times and he's had dinner with us."
Momma wanted Tweeder over for dinner to get to know him a little better. Nothing was wrong with that since she knew Tweeder already and he's ate over my house a lot since we began to hang out with each other.
"I know," Momma says. "But I wanna see if he's a good man for you. You know men who go by their last name are...you know."
"What ever momma," I mumbled under my breath.
The doorbell finally rung and I knew who it was.
I quickly ran to the door and opened it to see Tweeder holding a bouquet of flowers and my favorite candy, I was in awe. I gave him a big hug and he smelt so good.
"Hey," he greeted me and kissed me on the cheek. "Hi Mrs. Kane."
Tweeder held out his hand for momma to shake it.
"Hi Charlie," momma says and gave him a hug.
We all made our way to the dining table and sat down to eat. I sat beside Tweeder of course while momma sat on the opposite of us.
"So Charlie," Momma says while scooting up to the table. "What position in football are you playing?"
"Imma wide receiver," he says tapping his fingers on the table.
I felt Tweeder's leg bouncing up and down which I could tell he was nervous. I put my hand on his thigh so he could stop being nervous.
"Heard yall beat my Alma mater the other day," she says with a laugh. "You know I take offense to that."
"Sorry ma'am," Tweeder chuckled. "I couldn't let the Coyotes down."
My momma and Tweeder talked the whole dinner. I was glad momma and him were getting along and I had a feeling she liked Tweeder.
"Mrs. Kane you mind if I take Nyla out for some ice cream?" Tweeder asked.
"No I don't mind," Momma says.
"Thanks momma," I say giving her a kiss before running out the door to Tweeder's truck."I really wanted ice cream," I pouted.
We were at the lake and cuddling up on his truck bed looking up at the stars.
"I know," Tweeder says. "I just wanna enjoy each others company."
We sat in silence for a moment. It was nice to be alone with Tweeder as we sat in silence. My head was in his lap and he was caressing my hair.
"I have a question," I say to Tweeder.
"And I may have an answer," he says looking down on me.
I started biting my lips and fiddling with his fingers.
"Does your dad know about us?" I asked him.
Tweeder seemed to ignore my question and answered it a couple minutes later.
"We live in a small town so yeah," Tweeder says. "My daddy ain't no racist bigot Nyla."
"Oh I didn't mean it by that," I say sitting up to face him.
"I mean, he loves your daddy and when he found out I was dating you he was happy," he says with a smile. "He wanna meet you."
"Well that's good," I chuckled.
"I know it's good," he says giving me a kiss. "Now let's go get that ice cream that I promised."Over the past couple of days, me and Tweeder have been keeping our relationship a secret but I think we make it quite obvious. Many people talk about us behind our backs even the townsfolk did. We both didn't obviously care because who were they to judge really? We weren't really the ideal couple that people wanted us to be. Tweeder, a white teenager wide receiver dates me, a black female who isn't a cheerleader and doesn't do any sports. I heard Tweeder's been getting a lot of shit from some people and I kinda feel bad for him.
"Hey Mr. Tweeder is Tweeder home?" I asked his father as he opened the door.
He gave me a laugh and shook his head.
"Which Tweeder me or him?" He asked jokingly. "I'm just kiddin', he's upstairs."
"Thank you," I said and went upstairs.
"Hey," I say bursting into Tweeder's room.
He seemed a little sad when he saw me though. He was shirtless and only in some sweats and gave me a smile.
"Hey," he says as he grins ear from ear.
I shut the door behind me, took off my shoes and laid on the bed next to him.
"What's wrong?" I say as I caressed his face.
"Just some people," he sighs and tosses the football up in the air. "It's just pissing me off."
"Baby it's ok," I say and have him a kiss on the cheek. "Let's just...forget about it ok? I brought you some cookies."
"What type of cookies?" He asked sitting up in his bed.
"Hmm chocolate chip," I say smiling.
He was grinning from ear to ear and gave me a kiss."So how are you and Tweeder?" Mox asked me.
"We're good," I said and took a swig of my drink.
We were in the backyard of Mox's house since his parents wanted to throw a little get together.
"You know Nyla made a couple enemies," Jules says. "All the girls are mad Tweeder gotta girlfriend."
"Whatever fuck them," I say rolling my eyes.
"You know I heard uh...Dickie was talkin' bout you two," Wendell says. "I told him don't talk about my cousin racist fuck."
"I don't understand why everyone's having an issue with me and Tweeder dating," I say.
"Just don't worry people talk," Billy Bob says trying to comfort me. "It's the way this town is unfortunately."
"Yeah a racist ass town," Wendell muttered.
"I mean I don't care but I think it's getting to Tweeder," I say. "I'm worried about him."
"Well, as long as his daddy's around people aren't gonna give him too much shit any longer," Mox says.
"Yeah look on the bright side," Jules pitched in. "You're dating a West Canaan football player aka Tweeder. So be proud of that."
"Yeah," I sighed. "I guess so."
