The sun was setting on the Horan farm. Niall was sprawled on the grass, his limbs entangled with the other boy. Off into the distance, they could see the fair that stopped by every summer. Niall had made it a tradition to go every year. His parents found the fair tacky, and dirty. He would spend the first half of summer buttering his parents up, so they would let him go. They would send him along with a pocketful of coins to spend on food and games. His dad had always said that those games were made to take your money, you weren't going to get anything in return. Niall insisted that one year, he would finally have his chance to take away a prize.
The boy next to him stirred, he had fallen into a deep sleep just moments ago. Niall smiled down at him. This was their last summer together. At the start of fall, Niall was signing up for the war and the other boy was moving across the ocean, to America to start a new life.
In times like these, he had considered running away with the other boy. Run away to somewhere that would accept them for who they are. The town was a small place, people have already began to notice how close the two of them have become. Niall's mother had even stopped letting the other boy stay for dinner after a day of working on the Horan farm.
The boy lying in his arms finally stirred awake. "What time is it?" He grumbled scooting in closer to Niall.
"My parents are with Dr. Linton in the farm. They won't see us." Niall said resting his head on the boy's jet black hair.
"Excited for tomorrow?" He asked, his eyes still closed.
"Of course I am Zayn. You know the fair is my favourite." Niall said with a smile.
"This is going to be our last time at the fair." Zayn said after a few moments of comfortable silence.
Niall sighed. "I know."
"I'll miss you." Zayn mumbled as he traced circles along Niall's simple long sleeved shirt.
"But we have the rest of the summer together, don't say that now." Niall said watching Zayn's tanned fingers move along his chest.
All of a sudden, a voice from behind them interrupted their solitude. "Niall? Where are you?"
"Shit!" Niall exclaimed. He quickly jumped out, causing Zayn to topple off of him. "Sorry!"
"Don't worry about it." Zayn said standing up and straightening himself out. "I'll see you tomorrow." And with a quick kiss, Zayn quietly fled from the Horan farm.
"Right here mother!" Niall shouted back as soon as Zayn disappeared around the bend.
The next day Niall and Zayn met up by the ticket stand. All around them were women in their Sunday dresses and men sweating in their suits. Niall and Zayn had opted for simple work clothes as the heat was smothering. Niall had once again insisted on paying for Zayn's admission but the other boy refused.
Once inside, the boys went free. They rode all the free rides they could and split the cost for an ice-cold glass of lemonade. All around kids were squealing with delight as their tired parents chased after them. However, they couldn't escape the scowls they were getting from the adults. Whether it was because they were two, almost grown men running around like children in their work clothes or for the fact that they were Niall and Zayn, the talk of the town. Whatever reason it was, it caused Niall to pull his wool cap just a bit lower on his head.
"Well what do you want to do now?" Zayn asked as they walked past the animal auction.
"We could have lunch?" Niall said with a shrug.
Zayn looked down. "I didn't bring any more money." He muttered.
"Don't worry about it, I'll treat you." Niall said with a smile.
