Diane's tears slowly subsided, replaced by a numbness that wrapped around her heart like a protective shield, but Aaron's gentle hold remained. He was truly a steady presence that anchored her to reality.
"You're shivering," Aaron whispered, his breath warm against her ear.
Diane nodded, though she hadn't noticed. The café's warmth seemed to have dissipated, leaving her chilled to the bone.
Aaron stood, guiding her up with him. "Let's get you out of here."
Without a word, Diane let him lead her out of the café, into the crisp afternoon air. The world outside seemed brighter, louder, and more vibrant than the suffocating atmosphere they'd left behind.
As they strolled, Aaron's arm remained wrapped around her shoulders, its warmth and gentle pressure a soothing balm for her frazzled nerves. The crisp afternoon air carried the sweet scent of blooming flowers and freshly cut grass.
"There's a park just a short walk from here," Aaron suggested, his voice low and reassuring. "Would you like to clear your head with a walk?"
Diane sniffled, wiping her nose with a crumpled napkin that she'd taken from the café. "I'd like that."
The brief 10-minute walk to the park passed in comfortable silence. The sound of leaves crunching beneath their feet and the distant chirping of birds filled the air. As they turned the corner, the park's vibrant colors came into view – emerald-green grass, fiery red maples, and sun-kissed yellow oaks.
Upon entering the park, Diane felt a subtle shift in her mood. The serene atmosphere, dotted with laughing children and strolling couples, enveloped her like a warm hug. Aaron guided her to a weathered wooden bench, its slats worn smooth by countless visitors.
As they sat, Diane breathed in deeply, letting the earthy scent of the park calm her racing thoughts. Aaron's presence, steadfast and calming, anchored her beside him.
"Thank you for coming, Aaron." She smiled weakly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I honestly didn't want you to see me like this, but I didn't know who else to call."
Aaron's expression softened, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "You don't have to thank me, Diane. I'm here for you, no matter what." He took her hand, his fingers intertwining with hers in a gentle, comforting grasp.
As they sat in silence, Diane's gaze wandered to the children playing tag nearby. Their carefree joy was a stark contrast to her own shattered world. Aaron's hand remained wrapped around hers, a steady anchor.
Diane's thoughts drifted to the life she'd envisioned with Ian – a life now tainted by his betrayal. She felt Aaron's gentle squeeze on her hand, as if sensing her emotions.
"We were planning to start a family, you know" Diane said, her voice barely above a whisper as a sorrowful smile touched her lips. "I'd often imagine our little ones playing in parks just like this."
Aaron's expression turned compassionate, his eyes filled with understanding. "You'd be an amazing mother, Diane," he said softly.
Diane's eyes welled up with tears, but she fought to hold them back. "I thought we were building a life together, Aaron. But it was all a lie." Her voice cracked. "How could he do this to me, to us, when we were planning to bring children into the world?"
"We have no control over how others treat us," Aaron said, his voice filled with conviction, "but we can decide whether to accept it or not." He reassured her, his eyes locking onto hers. "He clearly didn't deserve you. You might not be able to see it now, Diane, but in a lot of ways, he really did you a favour."
