The next day, I was still feeling groggy and out of sorts. My body was heavy, like I hadn't slept in days, but I couldn't tell if that was because of the bite or just my restless mind. Smiley had stayed close the whole morning, his presence a constant, quiet reassurance, though he hadn't said much—just kept a watchful eye on me.

When it was time to head back to class, I felt a strange sense of dread in my stomach. I wasn't sure what to expect after last night. I wasn't sure how to act, what to say, or if anyone else had gone through the same thing.

As we made our way back to the teaching room, Smiley's hand stayed resting gently on the small of my back, guiding me forward.

As soon as we stepped into the classroom, my eyes scanned the room. Everyone was there. Liv, Lea, and even the new guy, who looked pale and anxious as he sat at his desk, nervously tapping his fingers against the surface. What caught my attention, though, were the marks.

Everyone had them.

Liv had a small bandage on her neck, but I could still see the edges of the bite beneath it. Lea was sitting stiffly, her hair half-covering the side of her neck, but there was no hiding the angry red marks there. The new guy, too—his neck was bruised, though his bite looked messier, more jagged.

So it wasn't just me.

A cold shiver ran through me. I reached up, instinctively touching my own bite mark. It still stung, and though I couldn't see it, I knew it looked just like theirs. Smiley stayed close, sitting beside me without a word, his eyes flicking between the others and me, as if silently checking to make sure I was okay.

I swallowed hard, trying to ignore the weight pressing down on my chest.

We've all been marked.

Liv caught my eye from across the room, and we exchanged a look. She raised her eyebrows, clearly wanting to ask a million questions, but none of us seemed ready to talk about it yet. It was like we were all too stunned to speak, too afraid to say what we were all thinking.

"Not. One. Word," I muttered under my breath, glancing at Liv and Lea. T

hey both nodded, understanding immediately. We weren't going to talk about the bites, not yet. Maybe it was too fresh, too raw. Or maybe none of us really wanted to admit what had happened last night.

The room was eerily quiet. The new guy fidgeted uncomfortably in his seat, looking like he was ready to bolt at any moment. I wondered if he even knew what the bite meant, or if he was just as confused as the rest of us had been before.

I felt Smiley shift beside me, his leg brushing mine under the desk. He leaned in closer, his voice barely above a whisper.

"You... okay?" His eyes were dark, filled with concern.

I nodded slowly, though I didn't quite believe my own answer.

Was I okay?

Physically, sure.

The pain was dulling, and I could move without too much discomfort. But emotionally, mentally? I wasn't sure. Everything felt different now, like I was living in someone else's body, in someone else's life.

Before I could respond further, the door creaked open, and the teacher walked in. His usual calm, indifferent demeanor was there, but today, there was something different in the air. Something heavier.

Without saying a word, he walked to the front of the room, his eyes scanning all of us—lingering a little longer on our necks, as if assessing the marks.

"Well," he said, clearing his throat. "I see you all made it through the night."

Made it through the night?

That phrase sat wrong with me. What exactly had we survived? The bite? The full moon? Or something else entirely?

I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as the teacher moved to stand in front of the whiteboard. He didn't write anything, just stood there, hands behind his back, as he continued speaking.

"Your mate bonds are now sealed," he said, his voice calm, as if this were just another casual lecture. "What you experienced last night was the solidifying of that bond—something that can't be undone."

I could feel my stomach drop.

Solidified.

That word felt like a chain being wrapped around me, locking me into something I didn't fully understand. Smiley's bite had done more than just leave a mark—it had changed everything. I wasn't sure how yet, but I could feel it, deep inside, like a tether connecting us, pulling me closer to him in a way that went beyond just physical attraction or affection.

Liv shifted uncomfortably beside me, and I glanced over at her. She looked just as uneasy, her fingers idly tracing the edge of her bandage.

"Is this... permanent?" Liv asked, her voice hesitant.

The teacher nodded. "Yes. The bond between mates is unbreakable. It ties your souls together."

I swallowed hard, trying to process that.

Unbreakable.

The word echoed in my head, over and over. I felt Smiley's eyes on me, his presence a steady anchor, but it didn't stop the flood of questions from crashing through my mind.

What did this mean for us?

For me?

Was I supposed to just accept this, accept him, without question?

"And what does that mean for us now?" Lea chimed in, her voice sharper than usual. She sounded annoyed, maybe even scared.

The teacher glanced at her, unphased by her tone. "It means that you'll start to feel more connected to your mate. Their emotions, their needs—they'll become more clear to you over time. You'll start to understand each other in ways that go beyond words."

I frowned, the weight of his explanation settling heavily on my shoulders.

Connected?

I already felt that pull, that strange sense of being tied to Smiley, but was it going to get stronger?

Would I start to feel what he felt?

"That's... a lot," I muttered under my breath, feeling the pressure mount.

The teacher didn't seem fazed. He continued on, explaining how the bond was meant to strengthen us, how it was supposed to bring us closer together, how it would protect us from the challenges we'd face—especially with the full moon.

"The full moon," he said, his voice taking on a more serious tone, "will be here tonight."

The room seemed to collectively freeze.

"Don't worry," he added quickly, "due to the laws and protections we have in place, you won't be hurt. However, you should still be cautious."

Cautious?

That didn't sound very reassuring.

"The full moon will bring out the primal instincts in your mates. Their inner beasts will surface, and it's a time that tests the strength of your bond."

I felt Smiley shift beside me again, his fingers tapping lightly against his thigh, as if trying to remain calm. I glanced at him out of the corner of my eye, and I could see the tension in his jaw.

"Just remember," the teacher continued, "the stronger your bond, the more control your mate will have. If your bond is weak..." His voice trailed off, leaving the rest unsaid.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady the growing panic inside me. The full moon. The inner beast.

Would Smiley be able to control it?

Or was I in danger tonight?

I didn't have the answers, but one thing was clear—whatever was going to happen tonight, I wasn't ready for it.
