001 - Street wise

I knew there was something off about it... I don't know what it was or ever be able to explain it to anyone other than I had a terrible feeling when I bumped into this person while roaming the streets.

My hunches are rarely wrong when it comes to these things, all that was left was to convince him to tag along otherwise I am more than likely just to become another unnamed casualty. Luckily I am not as naive to ever approach something like it solo, there's a reason this 'partnership' exists between the two of us.

"You sure about it?"

"Does it look human?" I counter.

"I trust that you won't manage to fuck up at such a grand scale."

I defend myself. "We've never mistook one of them for being human, even on the ones where it was a stab in the dark. Odds are if we split its torso apart the moment we are in the clear that the soul that pops out is that of a monster."

Him being taller than me, rests his elbow on my crown to peek around the corner towards the 'human' in question. It may appear normal but my gut and senses are screaming at me, even now the overwhelming sense of danger is resting on my stomach, tying my intestines into a knot.

"How certain?" He asks me again. I yank my head aside hoping that he smashes the side of his head into the wall.

I glance at him over my shoulder with a glare. "If you could sense them like I do... you wouldn't be able to mistake this aura for anything else."

"Let's get to it then," he steps away and offers his hand.

"Just like that? Not going to do the usual dance?"

He shakes his head. "Don't have the energy to do this same old back-and-forth with you tonight. Let's get it over with."

I smirk at him, "You know, you can just say that you trust me."

"Do it."

I grab him by the wrist as his form is swallowed whole and replaced with a peculiar blade, a hilt with a diamond-headed pommel with a winged hilt that bends into the base of this grand blade that expands at the end. Its core is a bright red that grows darker and darker the further it travels towards the tip.

It is demonic in design, but I've been told that humans like him are called demon weapons for a reason. That, however, does not diminish the cool factor.

I dash around the corner using it to spring forward and charge the creature in question. Dragging him behind me I swing the blade overhead and slam it at the creature's feet. The impact knocks it up and over me, I spin around and pull the blade through the creature with a backwards grip.

"That was easy," he says with a smug tone.

I land on my feet and look over my shoulder. "Surprising-"

There wasn't enough time to even finish my sentence, but my feet skidded across the floor and I came to a stop just before crashing into an unpainted brick wall. The air stinks of burning rubber and trails of smoke rise from the blade's body.

"It is still alive," he growls.

"I think if I didn't block that I'd be red paste," I voice my concern.

I cleaved it in half but... from the wounds it spat out veiny and muscular appendages replacing its lower body. The top half of what still appeared human, popped like a balloon to reveal a monstrosity that consists of just muscle and bone. Now it is almost the size of a troll.

I deepen my stance, lifting the blade as if to go for a charge. "Still looks human enough to be killed," he states. "We have this."

"Aye."
