Karan sat back in his chair, staring at the screen of his laptop but not really seeing it. His mind was still consumed by the memory of the girl who had helped him during the accident. The girl with the soft voice, the one who had made sure he was okay before disappearing into the night. He still couldn't shake the thought of her.
"Hey, Karan, you're gonna sit there all day thinking about that girl?" Raj's voice broke through his thoughts, and Karan looked up to see him and Arjun standing in the doorway, grinning.
"Not really in the mood for your teasing today, Raj," Karan muttered, rubbing his temples.
Raj walked in, clearly unfazed by Karan's grumpy tone. "Oh, come on, man. You've been lost in thought all week! You have this distant look in your eyes. We know it's about that mystery girl, right?"
Karan shifted uncomfortably in his chair, hoping to steer the conversation away from the girl who had saved him. "It's nothing. Just—stuff to think about."
"Oh, it's not nothing," Arjun jumped in, leaning casually against the doorframe. "You've been all over the place lately. Even Meera must be noticing."
Karan froze, a knot forming in his stomach. "Meera?" he asked, trying to keep his voice even.
Raj snickered. "Oh, come on. You've got all this interest in this mystery girl now. What about Meera? Are you gonna ditch her too?"
Karan shot them both a glare. "I'm not ditching anyone. I'm just thinking about something else, alright?"
Arjun raised an eyebrow. "Uh-huh. Sure. So when you're not thinking about Meera, you're thinking about this girl you don't even know?"
Karan stood up, his patience running thin. "It's none of your business."
Raj grinned and slapped Karan on the back, sending him stumbling forward a step. "Whatever, man. Just don't forget we're watching you. We've never seen you this distracted before."
Karan exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. "You guys are ridiculous."
"Yeah, yeah," Arjun said, chuckling. "Anyway, don't take it too seriously. We're just messing with you. But just know, we've got our eyes on you."
Karan sighed and turned toward the door. "I'm heading out," he muttered, his mind still heavy with thoughts of the mystery girl.
"Where are you going?" Raj called after him.
"Somewhere," Karan said, already halfway out the door.

Later that day, Karan found himself walking down the familiar campus paths, but his steps were distracted. He was heading to his favorite spot by the lake—a quiet place where he could think. As he approached the lake, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, seeing a message from Sameer.
Sameer:
"Bro, stop acting all mysterious. Meera's asking about you again. You've been avoiding her? Or are you too busy thinking about the 'other' girl?"
Karan groaned, shoving his phone back into his pocket. He didn't need this right now. Sameer's teasing was always relentless.
He found a spot on the bench by the water and sat down, trying to clear his head. He had to admit—his thoughts had been consumed with the girl who had helped him, the one whose voice he could still hear so clearly. She had been so kind, so gentle, and he hadn't even had a chance to thank her. But the more he thought about her, the more frustrated he became. Why couldn't he remember what she looked like? Why couldn't he find her?
---
Karan's phone buzzed again. This time, it was Raj sending a picture. It was a group shot from earlier in the day—everyone laughing and joking around. Meera was in the background, chatting with a few others, and Karan's gaze lingered on her. But beside her was Arav, her close friend, also smiling for the camera.
It hit him for a moment that Meera and Arav had such a comfortable camaraderie. Arav was always so easygoing and natural around her. He looked at the picture again, his thoughts still tangled with the girl who had helped him, and then back to Meera and Arav.
Meera's face was softer in the photo than he ever saw her in person, and for a second, he wondered if there was more to her than he'd noticed.
Karan stared at the picture for a few more seconds before tapping out a message.
Karan:
"Stop sending me pictures of her. I'm not interested."
Raj's response came quickly:
Raj:
"Sure, man. Whatever you say. You've been acting weird lately, though. Still haven't figured out if you're after her or someone else."
Karan rolled his eyes, knowing he had no real answer for that. He'd been confusing himself lately, and his friends were making it worse.
He pushed his phone into his pocket and started walking back toward the campus building. Meera's face lingered in his mind, but so did the girl who had helped him. Both of them so different, yet his mind kept comparing them. Meera, with her cold, distant demeanor, and the mystery girl, with her softness and care.
He needed to figure this out. He needed closure. He couldn't keep thinking about two women at once. Not when he still had so many questions about the girl who had saved him.
---
Later that evening, Karan lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. The mystery girl. Meera. His thoughts were tangled, like threads that refused to be straightened.
And as sleep finally overtook him, he couldn't help but wonder—would he ever find the girl who had saved him?
