"I really wish you'd stop dragging your feet every morning, Elodie." Ms. Perry sighed. "Today is the initiation for Welton. Do you think you're ready?" She asked.Elodie looked her dead in the eyes and shook her head. "Mother, why couldn't i stay at ridgeway?" She inquired. "I was so happy there! I had friends - who were girls, might i add, and the education system was fine! Hell, welton can't be much better, can it?" She insisted.
"It wasn't my decision, dear. Your father insisted you stick with your brother this year." She smiled and left. "Yeah, make me ditch my social life for Neil. Lovely." Elodie muttered to herself. "Elodie, where's my desk stuff?" Neil asked. "No clue, Neil. Need help looking for it?" She asked back.
"Nope! Found it." He said, shaking the box while walking into her room. "I know a bunch of boys at welton, they'll appreciate you. Especially your roommate.. he's a bit of a romantic." Neil laughed. "Oh god, am i with that dalton kid?" Elodie asked. Neil left the room.
"Neil! Am i with dalton?" She repeated. They loaded their stuff into their car. Elodie hummed the melody to "When I fall in love" by Brenda Lee as they quickly drove past brick buildings. Finally, they arrived at welton.
Elodie was totally zoned out for the entire introductory speech for all the new students. That was, until, she was called out in front of the whole school. "It is with great honour that I can announce that our schools gender range is expanding." Mr. Nolan started.
Wow. What a way to put it. Elodie muffled her laughter with her hands and Neil began to laugh too. "Please give a warm welcome to Elodie Perry." Mr. Nolan smiled at her, and pointed. "Did he have to point?" She whispered to Neil. This made him laugh even more.
The ceremony concluded and now all you could hear was tears from young boys. "Mother, I don't want to leave!" Said one young boy from the corner, gaps between words filled with his tears. "Elodie, you won't be a baby like these boys, will you? No crying, dear." Mr. Perry said, shaking her shoulder a bit.
Mr. Perry had always put.. incredibly high standards on his children. They weren't allowed to cry. Ever. Especially Neil. Apparently it "Damages his masculinity." Elodie knew it was a bunch of crap. Eventually, when all the parents had left, Neil led his sister to her room.
"I was right!" Elodie giggled as she entered the room. "Charlie, right?" She smiled. "Indeed, darling. I can't believe I was lucky enough to be roomed with the one girl at welton. How did you get in?" Charlie inquired.
"My father worked his magic." She sighed. "Unfortunately." She muttered under her breath. "What was that last part?" Charlie asked. "Nothing." She smiled at him. She threw herself onto her bed and sighed loudly.
"Where are you coming from, Perry?" Charlie asked her. "Ridgeway high." She laughed. "Woah, environment change.." He laughed with her. "Why would such a gorgeous girl join us at Hell-ton?" Charlie asked again. "My Father wanted to improve my studies, and get me to 'bond with my brother in the process'. Stupid, isn't it?"
"Not stupid at all. Is your father usually strict?" Charlie asked. "Enough with the questions, dalton." "Hey, can't a guy be curious?" Charlie laughed. "Not as much as you." Elodie laughed back. Charlie stood up and held his hand out to Elodie. "Let's go to Neil's room, shall we, darling girl?"
She smiled and took his hand. They entered Neil's room and Charlie shot down onto Neil's bed. "Gentlemen, a new year at welton means a new study group. Charlie?" "I'm in 100%, as always." Charlie grinned. "Meeks? Pitts?" Neil asked. The two boys nodded. "Knox? What about you?" "Can't do it tonight, boys. I've got dinner with.. the Danburry's." Knox shot a cheeky grin at the boys sat around him.
"Ooh, the Danburry's. My friend is dating their son." Elodie chimed in. "Your friend? You have friends?" Neil asked, mockingly. "Oh shut up, Mr. Summer School." Elodie shot back. "Summer School? Ahh, I heard that rumour." Charlie smiled. "It was just chemistry. My father wanted me to get ahead." Neil sighed. "He's always on my back." "Just snap at him, Perry. That's how I solve my problems." Charlie laughed at Neil's displeasure.
"Or, you don't suggest something that could risk my brother's life? Thanks, dalton." Elodie shot a sarcastic grin at the now smiling boy. "Worse he'll get is escaping this school." Charlie shot back. "Yeah, and getting send to military school. Not much better than Hell-ton, is it, dalton?" Neil laughed.
"But, Elodie. I do hope you'll join our study group." One of the boys smiled at her. There's so many of them, she couldn't tell the difference. Only one boy stood out to her. The one who hadn't said a word. "Todd? You coming?" Neil asked the silent boy. "I- um. I'll have to.. think about it." Todd shivered as he spoke. Elodie smiled at him as she left the room with Charlie. "That's a shy boy if I ever knew one." Elodie laughed with Charlie on the way back to their dormitory.
Hey, maybe this could be fun.
