Chapter 4
As the day progressed, customers came and went each a blur in my vision and a stranger in my mind. At closing time I locked the doors of the shop and made my way to the subway. Checking my phone I saw that I had 1 new message, it was from Max. 'Hey, meet me at THE restaurant around 6. It is important, please.' I contemplated going, but in the end went home and got ready. The waiter led me to a table in the very back of the garden area. There was no one else around, except a familiar patch of wild curly dark brown hair.
"Your table, ma'am." The waiter mumbled quickly as he brought me around to my side of the small table. Max gazed up at me, a look of amazement flashed across his face. "I am glad you decided to come after what happened last time we were here. Just let me explain......" I got up and grabbed my purse, making a hasty exit. "Max, I have to go. I can't do this anymore, if you are seeing another girl. I can't be your backup girl or your girl on the side." As I reached the entrance to the inner part of the restaurant I could hear Max's chair scrape across the stone ground. Then the sound of his shoes hitting the pavement followed.
What looked like the manager of the restaurant came up to me causing me to stop in my tracks. 'I am truly sorry for the way my waitress interrupted your dinner ma'am. She is always doing that with any famous person or cute guy she sees come here.' Making her way out front of the restaurant and stopping at the edge of the curb, the wheels started turning in my mind. Wait, what? The doubter in me could barely comprehend what I had just heard. That girl from before was some random girl, Max didn't even know her. All of a sudden, I felt like crap for treating Max the way I had. Turning around suddenly, I made my way back to the back of the restaurant. Max was grabbing his favorite red leather jacket of the chair when I skidded to a stop right in front of him.
"I thought you were already gone," I gasped, "we need to talk." With all the bravery and strength I could muster, I closed the space between us and kissed Max on the lips. Still shocked from the kiss Max asked, "I thought you wanted to talk? What was that?"
"That was my sorry kiss for jumping to conclusions too quickly. I didn't let you have a chance to explain yourself. Can you ever forgive me?" Tears cascaded down my eyelashes landing in Max's palm as he wiped away all my pain and suffering. "Of course I will love. This is only one of the trials we will have to face if we want our love to stay strong."
Max planted a quick kiss to my forehead and grabbed my hand softly. Lifting me off my feet, he spun me around whispering into my ear sending shivers down my spine. "Let's get out of here and go somewhere. Anywhere. Where would you like to go?" I look her time, but I eventually thought of the perfect place. Since our one month anniversary since we had met was coming up (I know it sounds stupid), I told him of the perfect place. Minutes later we had arrives at the fountain in the park, where we had officially met. Max brought his ukulele, and like the guy he was he decided to play and impromptu song for me. By the end I had tears in my eyes, and a few onlookers had stopped and put money in Max's hat he had put next to him on the fountain's edge.
Max and Lexi took the subway back to his house, where she fell asleep as the subway car shook her to sleep. Max carried her limp and sleepy body to his bed and made his way to the bathroom. The split lip was almost unnoticeable, the cut on the cheek was still healing, and his broken hand was still sore but he could still use it. After cleaning up his face and changing into comfier clothes, Max laid down on the bed next to Lexi. He was worried about touching her or getting to close in the light of what had just transpired earlier in the day. However, a minute later she was curled up into him with her head on his chest and their hands intertwined.
Sun was shining through the window when Max woke in the early morning dawn. Checking the clock, he realized it was actually around 9 am and he had to be at the studio in thirty minutes. Knowing that it would take him that long to find a cab, he dashed around his room searching for sufficient clothing and wrote a quick note to Lexi. Sprinting out the door and to the sidewalk, Max whistled for a cab and made a quick hast. Rubbing my eyes and letting a shutter course through my body, I noticed that Max was nowhere to be found. A note caught my eye, and it said he was at the studio and had a surprise for me when he got back.
