The Sun rises. Just like it does every morning. Lovely. The consistency and reliability in my life is very much appreciated. I cannot deal with drama in the slightest, so I wonder how someone as simple and easygoing as me has become best friends with Hanni, my extremely energetic, spontaneous and funny, yet reliable, bestie.

Even though everything goes as planned - I chomp down a slice of sourdough with avo, hop into a burning hot shower, and blast my unreasonably noisy music as I get ready for my long day of organised, precisely placed lessons - on my morning, something is just slightly different. The golden light faltering in through my dust painted blinds is more drastic than usual. Spring is here.

Mum : Y/n! Hurry up! What is that song, and why are you screaming about breaking a wall?

Y/n : *sighs lazily* It's the lyrics of the song, Mum, and I'm coming!

A ping sounds from my phone, temporarily pausing the music and leaving me acapella for the most beautiful high note of the tune I fail to reach. Well, it's not actually a ping, but a quack. My taste in music and in ringtones are questionable, but I don't have the capacity in my friend group of just four to be judged. Four is plenty; I would pick them over any other loser in my high school : Saebom High, home of the lame and lousy.

Hanniiiii ;) : Heyyy sunshine! Just a reminds about the Maths homework. I only finished it this morning! Don't forget...

Damn it. I send my swift hands rummaging through my school bag, and yank out my maths folder. Oh wow, when did I do this work?

You : I did it. Thanks for the reminder bestie!!!

Haniiiii ;) : Ofc. Did you hear the news?

You : Ummmm

Hanniiiii ;) : I'll take that as no. I'll tell you at school! But you'll probably see it when you get there...

You : Hey! Don't leave me on a cliffhanger. Just tell me now.

You : HEY

You : NOW I'M DAMN CURIOUS

Knowing Hanni, who is prone to over exaggerating, but never making things up, the news was probably not as grand or surprising as I'd expect from her notice. Even still, I'm curious. This incentive to get to school on time shoots energy through my bones, and in a millisecond I'm out and waving goodbye to my Father, who is preparing his famous fried chicken behind the window of his quaint little cafe. The tiny space I grew up in, brimming with the scent of his signature chicken dip, never lost its flare amongst the community of our small neighbourhood.

*at school*

Jungwon : Guys, my Mum made us dumplings! Here you go, y/n.

Y/n : Ooo, these look lovely. Are they veg?

Jungwon : Yep, here's the soy sauce.

Yuna : *snaps her hands together and lowers her head* Thank you for the food!

All the friends : *laugh, and take a dumpling*

Hanni : *inhales a dumpling decked with soy sauce* Mm! Spill the secret, Jungwon. Your Mum should be awarded the best chef of Korea!
