Later that evening, Alex found himself back at the apartment, the space feeling colder and more hollow than ever. He sat alone in his room, the silence pressing down on him, punctuated only by the occasional muffled sound of traffic from outside. Every time he closed his eyes, images of Mia and Ethan flitted through his mind, an unending loop of suspicion and hurt.

Desperate for some clarity, he grabbed his phone and called Jordan. The conversation at the café had been helpful, but he needed his friend's steady voice to break through the turmoil again.

"Hey, man," Jordan answered, his voice warm and reassuring. "You doing alright?"

Alex let out a sigh, the weight of everything pressing on him. "Honestly? Not really. I don't even feel like myself anymore. It's like my entire life has been flipped upside down."

"Listen, I've been thinking," Jordan said after a pause. "You don't have to do this alone. This situation with Mia and Ethan—it's toxic, and they're both obviously keeping things from you. I think it's time you distance yourself from both of them."

Alex's hand clenched around his phone, a flash of relief running through him. The thought of stepping away from Mia and Ethan, of not having to confront this betrayal alone, felt like a weight lifting, if only slightly.

"But how am I supposed to just... cut them out?" Alex murmured, feeling torn. "Mia was—she is everything to me. Or at least she was. And Ethan... we've been friends for years. I don't even know what went wrong."

"Sometimes people change," Jordan replied, his tone gentle but firm. "And sometimes they aren't who you thought they were. But you deserve better than this. You deserve people who are loyal, who won't lie and sneak around. Someone who cares about you as much as you care about them."

Alex took a deep breath, letting Jordan's words sink in. "So... what do I do now? Just walk away without any answers?"

Jordan's voice turned thoughtful. "Not exactly. I think you deserve closure, Alex. But if you're going to get to the truth, you need to be smart about it. I'm not saying you should go full detective here, but maybe it's time you start gathering some evidence of what really happened."

"Evidence?" Alex asked, feeling a mix of curiosity and apprehension. "You mean... spying on them?"

"Not spying," Jordan said quickly. "Think of it more like... getting clarity. You've got to know what really went down, or you'll be questioning it forever. And whatever's happening, it's not like they're being honest with you. Maybe looking at things from a distance can give you the answers you need to move on."

Alex mulled over Jordan's suggestion, feeling a cautious sense of purpose brewing within him. It wasn't something he'd normally do, but then again, he'd never expected Mia to betray him either.

"I guess I could start by checking her social media," Alex said slowly. "Maybe there's something there that I missed. And her messages... I know it sounds crazy, but what if she's left some clues behind?"

Jordan nodded, his voice encouraging. "Exactly. Check the little things, the stuff you might have overlooked. Look at your photos together—see if there's anything that stands out. And if you're up for it, maybe check her phone if you ever get the chance. I know it's a long shot, but you'd be surprised how much people leave behind without realizing it."

The thought made Alex uneasy, but at the same time, it was the first actionable plan he'd had since the discovery. "You're right. I can't just keep spiraling in confusion. I need to know what really happened, or I'll never be able to move on."

"Exactly," Jordan agreed. "And remember, whatever you find out... you don't have to face it alone. You've got me here. We'll get through this together, man."

A grateful smile tugged at the corners of Alex's mouth. "Thanks, Jordan. I don't know what I'd do without you right now."

"Hey, anytime. Just focus on taking it one step at a time. And, Alex? Whatever happens, remember you deserve people who respect you enough to be honest."

After they hung up, Alex felt a faint sense of relief—mixed with the dread of what he might uncover. But the conversation had given him direction, a way to start unraveling the tangled web of his relationship with Mia and his friendship with Ethan. For the first time in days, he felt a hint of resolve.

He decided to start small. He opened Mia's social media profiles, scrolling through their photos together. At first, everything seemed normal—pictures from their trips, birthdays, lazy weekends. But the longer he looked, the more he noticed small details he'd missed before: her smile, which seemed forced in recent pictures; her posture, stiff and slightly turned away in photos where Ethan happened to be present. The once happy memories now felt tainted, layered with a truth he hadn't noticed at the time.

Then there were the posts she'd been tagged in by mutual friends. He started reading the comments, scrolling further and further back. His heart clenched when he saw a series of playful exchanges between Mia and Ethan, written casually enough to seem innocent but holding a flirtatious undertone he hadn't seen before. Inside jokes, comments on each other's photos, and subtle compliments that seemed to go unnoticed by everyone else—but now, in hindsight, struck him as a trail he'd missed.

"Maybe I should've seen this coming," he muttered to himself, a sinking feeling taking hold.

Feeling restless, Alex moved to his own photos, pulling up selfies they'd taken together, his arm slung around her as they laughed into the camera. In so many of those photos, he could now see her phone lying nearby, just slightly out of reach, her gaze flickering to it as if she was waiting for something else—someone else. It was a small detail, but the pattern was unmistakable.

A knot of anger began to tighten in his chest. This was more than a momentary lapse, more than a one-time mistake. It felt deliberate, as if he'd been lied to in plain sight, the truth hidden in the cracks of their once-perfect facade.

When he finally couldn't stand to look at the photos anymore, he set his phone down and rubbed his eyes, feeling emotionally drained but determined. Jordan was right: he needed the full story, all the pieces, to finally put this chapter of his life to rest.

The only problem was, he still didn't know what would come next. All he could do was hope that, with Jordan's help, he'd be able to gather enough clarity to make sense of the betrayal and find the strength to move forward.

Little by little, he was starting to see things clearly. And while it hurt, that clarity was the first step to breaking free from the lies and reclaiming his life.
