The following evening, Alex found himself pacing in his apartment, his thoughts swirling with the anger and hurt that had been building since his conversation with Jordan. The quiet of the room felt oppressive, and each tick of the clock seemed to taunt him, counting down to a moment he knew he couldn't avoid. He was going to confront Mia again—this time, face-to-face and without the pretense of ignorance.
Finally, he heard the sound of her key turning in the lock. She stepped inside, looking weary, with shadows under her eyes and a tightness in her shoulders that he hadn't noticed before. The sight of her, so familiar yet now so alien, struck him with a pang of bitterness. She glanced up, catching his expression, and her face fell.
"Hey, Alex," she greeted quietly, almost cautiously.
He crossed his arms, his jaw set. "Mia, we need to talk."
A flicker of something—a spark of guilt, maybe even fear—crossed her face, and she nodded, setting down her bag. She took a seat on the couch, leaving space between them, her eyes focused on her hands as if avoiding his gaze.
"I'm listening," she murmured, her voice soft and guarded.
Alex took a deep breath, steadying himself. "I think you know what I want to talk about. I know about Ethan. I know something's going on between you two."
Her head snapped up, her expression one of shock tinged with sadness. "Alex, it's not what you think—"
"Oh really?" he cut her off, his tone harsh. "Because I saw the messages, Mia. The secretive texts, the mentions of payments, and some guy named Allen. I know you two have been scheming behind my back, and I have a right to know what this is really about."
For a moment, Mia looked like she might deny it all again, but then her shoulders slumped, and a wave of emotion passed over her face. She looked away, biting her lip, a pained expression softening her usually guarded features. "It's not... it's complicated," she finally said, her voice trembling.
"Complicated?" Alex repeated, his frustration mounting. "Mia, do you have any idea what it feels like to find out the person you trusted has been lying to you? To feel like you've been a fool this whole time?"
She flinched at his words, a raw look of regret in her eyes. "I know, Alex. I know I hurt you, and I hate that you're in pain because of me. But... I can't explain everything. Not yet."
He shook his head, barely able to believe what he was hearing. "Why not? What's stopping you? If this is just some money scheme or—" He stopped, swallowing back the anger that threatened to spill over. "If there's something going on that I deserve to know, then tell me the truth."
Mia seemed to struggle with herself, glancing toward the door as though she was considering running away. Instead, she stayed seated, taking a deep breath as she finally looked him in the eyes.
"Alex... I swear, it's not what you think. I haven't been... I haven't been unfaithful, at least not in the way you're imagining. But there's something I got myself mixed up in, and Ethan..." She hesitated, her voice faltering. "Ethan's involved, but not by choice. This thing, it's bigger than both of us. It's not just about me, or you, or even him."
Alex's heart pounded as he tried to make sense of her words. "Then what is it, Mia? What's so 'big' that you'd go behind my back, that you'd be willing to hurt me?"
A shadow fell over her face, and her expression hardened as she looked away. "I can't say, Alex. If I told you, it would only make things worse—for you and for me."
Her reluctance, her guarded demeanor, only stoked his anger and confusion. "You owe me the truth, Mia. If you care about me at all, you'll tell me what's really going on."
A tear slipped down her cheek, and she quickly brushed it away, her voice barely above a whisper. "Alex, you have to trust me. I didn't want things to end up like this, and I never wanted to hurt you. But there's... something at stake that you don't understand."
A sudden clarity hit Alex, the pieces falling together in a way he hadn't anticipated. His voice softened, and he reached out, his hand hovering near hers. "Mia, if you're in trouble—if Ethan's forcing you into something you don't want to do—just tell me. Let me help you."
Her expression wavered, and for a moment, he thought she might finally open up to him. But then she shook her head, withdrawing her hand. "You can't help me, Alex. This is something I have to handle on my own. I've made mistakes... but they're my mistakes to fix."
The words left him feeling hollow, as though a wall had been built between them that he could no longer break down. Mia's reluctance to explain, her cryptic statements, all pointed to something deeper, something that scared her enough to keep her silent. He wanted to push, to demand answers, but the vulnerability in her eyes held him back.
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I don't know what to believe anymore, Mia. Everything feels like a lie."
She looked down, a sad smile on her lips. "I understand. I don't expect you to forgive me... or to wait for me. But I wish you'd believe me when I say that I never wanted to hurt you."
Silence settled between them, heavy and oppressive. Mia seemed lost in her own thoughts, her face etched with a sorrow he'd never seen before. It left Alex with more questions than answers, a bitter frustration gnawing at him as he searched her face for some sign that she was telling the truth.
"Then what do we do now?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Mia closed her eyes for a moment, as if gathering herself. When she looked at him again, her face was resolved, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I don't know, Alex. But whatever happens, I just... I hope one day you'll understand why I did what I did."
With that, she rose from the couch, leaving him alone with a million unanswered questions and a heart that felt more broken than ever.
As the door clicked shut behind her, Alex sank into the couch, a hollow feeling settling in his chest. Whatever secrets Mia was keeping, whatever game Ethan had roped her into, it felt as if he was still missing the final, crucial piece of the puzzle. And until he could find it, he'd be left grappling with a betrayal he didn't fully understand.
But one thing was certain: he couldn't stop now. Not with so much left hidden in the shadows.
