That voice

Walking, no floating in this pitch black void of nothingness, Lori wondered how she got here.

Was this all just a dream? She didn't know. I mean how could she.

One minute she came home after an exhausting day at work, immediately going to sleep and the another she was here.

„So young yet already dead" a voice said as it echoed in loris mind.

Dead? Was she really dead. For some reason Lori didn't mind the fact she was dead.

Yeah sure, she was successful and had achieved her life goal yet there was still something her heart ached after.

No, someone her heart ached after. It's wasn't a particular person, but people in general.

While she was successful she never had any friends, always fixated on success, getting perfect grades and being independent.

„your house caught fire in your sleep. An old cable started burning while you were sleeping" the voice said again in a much more gentler and softer tone now.

Lori wondered where the voice came from and who it was from. There was no one here. Nothing here.

But did it really matter? After all this was more of an interaction with someone, or something as this things surely wasn't human, than she had gotten in a long time.

Just then she felt a comforting and soft touch on her cheek. „Why were you so lonely, dear?"

Lori didn't answer, lost in the soothing touch of whoever's voice this was.

„I feel bad for you. You didn't even make it to your thirties and no one came to your funeral. Your brother bring to busy on his honeymoon with his new wife and your sister caring for her new baby. I guess it isn't that surprising seeing as you never made an attempt to have a relationship with them, always fixated on success. I'll give you another chance darling. I'll send you back to the moment that could have chanced everything if you hadn't been so possessed by the idea of being independent and needing no one. The one that would have filled that ache in your heart".

Just as the voice extinguished, she was on the ground on what seemed to be her old schools hallway, a hand stretched out towards her.

She remembered this. Moments before a guy in school had bumped into her.

„Do you need help getting up?" the boy said, a kind smile on his face.

Last time she refused, being set on never needing anyones help, and thinking he was being condescending but his smile seemed so...genuine?

She remembered his smile being cocky and sarcastic but looking back on it, it was probably just the outcome of her convinced mind and fuzzy memory.

Wait- was this the moment that voice meant? The one could fix that lonely ache?

„Well? Are you going to accept or not?" the boys voice pulled her out of her thoughts as she took his hand.

„I'm Tim by the way" he said while pulling her up
