The car ride back to my house was quiet—too quiet. Jade sat in the passenger seat, staring out the window, her fingers twisting in her lap. I wanted to say something, but my mind was still spinning. Coach Holland was her dad. The guy I looked up to, the guy I didn't want to disappoint, was her father.
I pulled into the driveway, cutting the engine. Jade was out of the car before I could even unbuckle my seatbelt. I followed her inside, the sound of the door shutting behind us echoing through the quiet house.
"Do you want something to drink?" I asked, heading toward the kitchen, needing something—anything—to keep my hands busy.
She shook her head, standing awkwardly in the living room. "No, I'm fine."
I grabbed a water bottle anyway, twisting the cap but not drinking it. When I turned back around, she was standing by the couch, her arms crossed.
"So," I started, leaning against the counter, "your dad's Coach Holland."
She let out a breath, her shoulders stiffening. "Yeah. Surprise."
"Yeah, that's... definitely a surprise." I laughed, but it sounded forced, even to me.
She dropped onto the couch, her jaw tightening. "Look, I get it if this changes things. I probably should've told you sooner—"
"It doesn't change how I feel about you," I interrupted, moving to sit across from her. "But it does make things... complicated."
Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Complicated how?"
I rubbed the back of my neck, trying to find the right words. "Your dad... I've looked up to him for years. He's the reason I came to this school. The way he pushes us, the way he cares about the team—he's the kind of coach I want to play for. The kind of person I want to be like." I hesitated, meeting her gaze. "If he finds out about us... I don't know how he'd take it. And I don't want to mess things up with him."
Jade's expression softened, but her eyes still held a trace of defensiveness. "You think I don't know that? He's not exactly subtle about how he feels about the team—or about me dating anyone on it."
That made me pause. "Wait, he's said something about that?"
She nodded, her lips pressing into a thin line. "Yeah. He made it very clear before school started. 'Stay away from lacrosse players, Jade.'" She laughed bitterly. "As if he could stop me."
I leaned back, running a hand through my hair. "Great. So we're both screwed if he finds out."
"Pretty much," she said with a small shrug.
For a moment, neither of us said anything. I could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen, the sound grounding me.
"We can keep this between us," I said finally, my voice quieter. "At least for now."
