Jade

It was Monday, tonight the lacrosse team had a scrimmage, but it wasn't just any game—it was the one my dad had been texting me about for days. 'Please be there, sweetheart, I'd really like you to come.' I hadn't responded to him yet. I didn't know what to say, didn't know how to bridge the gap between what I was feeling and what he expected from me. I just didn't know what to feel about anything, especially about him.

I had barely spoken to my mom all weekend, too. How could I? What was there to say when the man she trusted, the one I had looked up to for so long, had done something so... unforgivable?

I had to talk to him. I needed to. But what would I say?

It wasn't until just before I was about to head to class that I finally tapped out a text.

Jade: I'll be there tonight relax.

I stared at the screen for a few seconds before I hit send. I left class and head straight to him knowing I needed to speak to him.

So, there I was, standing in front of the lacrosse field house. The last thing I wanted to do was run into any of the guys, especially not Garrison. The thought of him seeing me walk into my dad's office, how could I explain this without having to reveal who my dad was to him? How would I even start?

I took a deep breath, pushed the door open, and walked inside, hoping the place was empty. And, fortunately, it was.

I knocked lightly on my dad's office door.

"Come in," his voice called out, and I hesitated for just a moment before entering.

When he saw me, he smiled, standing up from behind his desk. "Honey, hey! How are you? Come in, come in."

I closed the door behind me softly and made my way over to the chair in front of his desk. My hands were cold, and I felt this strange pressure building in my chest. How had we gotten here? How had I ended up in this office, facing the person I once thought I could trust more than anyone, and now... now, I felt like a stranger.

"You haven't been responding to me," he said, concern creeping into his voice as he sat back down. "Everything okay?"

I wasn't okay, but I had to say something. I had to say something now. He wasn't getting off easy.

"I need to talk to you," I said, my voice much firmer than I expected. I didn't want to sound like I was crying, not yet, not until I got the words out.

He sat up straight, his brow furrowing. "What's up? Is everything okay? You look like you've got something on your mind."

I swallowed hard, trying to keep it together. I had no idea how to start, but I knew there was only one way to do this.

"I know you're cheating on Mom," I blurted out, immediately regretting it, but not being able to take it back.

His face froze. He didn't say anything for a moment, just staring at me like I'd slapped him. Then, his voice came out low, defensive. "What are you talking about? That's ridiculous."
