The forest grew darker with each step, and the air felt colder, as if the warmth of the world had been sucked away. Mya, Dani, and Jayden walked close together, their weapons clutched tightly, each glance searching the trees for any sign of movement. The silence was almost eerie, broken only by the crunching of leaves beneath their feet. Mya shivered, pulling her cloak tighter around her shoulders. "I don't like this. It feels like the woods are watching us."
Dani nodded, her grip firm on the short sword. "Me neither. Something's... wrong."
Jayden scanned the path ahead, his dagger ready. "Stay sharp. Whatever comes next, we can handle it—together."
As if responding to his words, a cold wind blew through the trees, carrying with it an unsettling, distant sound—a faint wailing, as though someone was calling out from far away.
"What... what is that?" Mya asked, her voice a whisper.
Before anyone could answer, the wailing grew louder, and strange shapes began to take form in the mist surrounding them. Shadows shifted and morphed, elongating into ghostly figures with hollow eyes and translucent bodies. They drifted forward, faces twisted in anguish, their hands reaching out toward the trio.
Dani took a step back, fear flickering in her eyes. "Ghosts. They're... they're everywhere."
One of the spirits, a young woman with tangled hair and a mournful expression, floated closer. Her eyes locked onto Jayden, and her voice was a haunting echo. "Help me... please..."
Jayden swallowed, instinctively reaching out. "Who... who are you?"
The ghost's face twisted in pain, her hollow eyes filled with sorrow. "We are the lost. The forgotten. Bound to this place by the darkness. Please... free us..."
The other spirits joined in, their voices a haunting chorus of despair. "Free us... free us..."
Mya tightened her grip on her staff, her gaze darting between the ghostly figures. "They're trapped here... because of Marcus?"
The young woman nodded slowly, her hand reaching toward Mya. "The darkness... it consumes. It feeds on fear... pain... hatred. We are bound here... until it is broken."
Jayden glanced at Dani and Mya. "Do you think they're telling the truth? Are they really trapped because of Marcus?"
Dani hesitated, then nodded. "I think so. Madame Seraphina warned us that Marcus's darkness affects more than just him. These spirits are suffering... maybe helping them will weaken his power."
Mya looked at the young woman, a flicker of compassion in her eyes. "How can we free you?"
The ghost's hand brushed against Mya's cheek, cold as ice. "Find... the lantern. A light... hidden deep within the forest. Bring it here, and its flame... will release us."
"A lantern?" Dani echoed, scanning the surrounding trees. "Where do we find it?"
The young woman's gaze turned distant. "It lies beyond... the Broken Hollow. Beware... for the shadows guard it fiercely. They know what will happen if the light returns."
Jayden tightened his grip on his dagger. "All right. We'll get the lantern and bring it back. Just... hang on."
The ghosts faded back into the mist, their sorrowful wails lingering as they disappeared among the trees.
Mya looked at her friends, determination flickering in her eyes. "We have to help them. They've suffered because of Marcus's darkness... and if freeing them weakens his hold, it'll help us, too."
