The forest was a maze of shadows and branches, closing in on Dani, Mya, and Jayden as they ran, their breath coming in ragged gasps. The cold air stung their lungs, and the thick underbrush snagged at their clothes. Darkness surrounded them, broken only by the sliver of moonlight piercing through the trees. Behind them, the wind howled, carrying with it faint whispers that made their skin crawl."We have to keep moving!" Jayden urged, glancing over his shoulder. His grip on the rusty knife was tight, but even he knew it wouldn't be enough to protect them from what was coming.
"I'm trying!" Mya panted, her voice trembling. Her feet stumbled over a fallen branch, but Dani caught her arm before she fell.
"Careful," Dani whispered. She could hear the urgency in her own voice, but she forced herself to stay calm for Mya's sake. Panic wouldn't help them now.
They had fled the cabin as quickly as they could, Marcus's sinister smile still etched in their minds. The ghost's whispers had chased them through the woods, but they couldn't stop. They couldn't look back.
"How far do you think we are from town?" Mya asked, her breath hitching with every step.
Jayden shook his head. "I don't know. We've been running for almost an hour. But the road should be close—if we can just make it there—"
Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the woods, freezing them in place. They exchanged terrified glances, the silence that followed pressing down on them like a weight.
"What was that?" Dani whispered, her heart pounding in her chest.
"Probably just a branch," Jayden said, though his voice was far from convincing.
The three of them stood in tense silence, straining to hear any other sounds. The forest felt alive around them, every rustle of leaves or snap of twigs like a threat.
"Let's keep moving," Dani urged, gripping Mya's hand. "We can't stay in one place."
They started walking again, but their pace had slowed, fear making every step feel like a risk. Jayden led the way, his eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of Marcus—or worse, the ghost. The oppressive silence pressed in on them from all sides.
"I just want this to be over," Mya muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. "I want to go home."
"We will," Dani replied, trying to sound hopeful even though she felt the same gnawing dread. "We just need to get to town. We'll be safe there."
Jayden wasn't so sure. The old woman they were hoping to find had been cryptic and unsettling. What if she couldn't help them? What if there was no way to stop whatever had taken Marcus?
"Jayden," Mya said, breaking through his thoughts. "Are you sure we're going the right way? I don't recognize any of this."
He stopped for a moment, staring into the dense trees. "I... I think so. It's easy to get turned around in the dark, but we have to keep going. The road has to be close."
A sharp, bone-chilling voice cut through the silence. "You can't run from me."
All three of them froze, their bodies locking up in terror.
It was Marcus. His voice echoed through the trees, but it sounded wrong—distorted, layered with that eerie ghostly tone they had heard before. The wind seemed to carry it from every direction, making it impossible to pinpoint where he was.
"Where is he?" Mya whimpered, clutching Dani's arm.
Jayden's eyes darted around, his grip tightening on the knife. "I don't know. But we have to move. Now."
Without another word, they broke into a run again, their footsteps pounding against the forest floor. The branches clawed at their skin as they pushed through the thick underbrush, the darkness swallowing them whole.
"You can't escape," Marcus's voice whispered again, this time closer.
Dani's breath hitched, and she glanced over her shoulder, fear surging through her veins. "We have to go faster!"
But Mya stumbled, letting out a cry as she fell to the ground. Jayden and Dani skidded to a stop, rushing back to help her up.
"I-I'm sorry," Mya sobbed, clutching her ankle. "I tripped!"
"Shh," Dani whispered urgently, glancing around. "It's okay. Just... we have to keep moving."
Jayden crouched beside Mya, his eyes wide with panic. "Can you walk?"
Mya winced as she tried to put weight on her foot. "I don't know... it hurts."
"Let me help you," Dani said, throwing Mya's arm over her shoulder. "Lean on me. We can't stay here."
They started moving again, slower now, with Dani half-carrying Mya as they limped through the trees. Jayden stayed ahead, trying to keep his eyes on the path while his mind raced with fear.
"Look," he said suddenly, pointing ahead. "I see the road!"
Dani's heart leaped in her chest. Just a few yards ahead, the forest began to thin, and the faint outline of the road was visible through the trees.
"We're almost there!" she said, relief flooding her voice. "Just a little farther."
But before they could reach the road, Marcus's voice boomed again, louder this time, as if he were right behind them. "You won't make it."
Dani's breath caught in her throat as she turned to see a figure emerging from the shadows of the trees. It was Marcus, his eyes glowing with that unnatural light, his smile twisted into something monstrous.
"Run!" Jayden shouted, bolting toward the road.
Dani didn't need to be told twice. She tightened her grip on Mya and ran as fast as she could, the pain in Mya's ankle barely slowing them down now. The road was so close, but Marcus was getting closer.
"I see you," Marcus taunted, his voice chilling.
Jayden reached the edge of the road first, skidding to a stop as he looked back. "Come on! You're almost there!"
With a final burst of energy, Dani and Mya stumbled onto the road, panting and trembling. But Marcus was right behind them, his presence looming like a nightmare.
"Stay behind me," Jayden said, stepping in front of Dani and Mya, his knife raised. His hands shook, but his eyes were determined.
Marcus stepped out of the trees, his grin widening as he took slow, deliberate steps toward them. His eyes glowed brighter, and the air around them seemed to hum with dark energy.
"You think you can stop me?" Marcus asked, his voice layered with that eerie, ghostly whisper.
Jayden didn't respond. He tightened his grip on the knife, ready to fight, even though he knew it was futile. There was no way they could stop Marcus—not like this.
Suddenly, the sound of a car engine roared through the night. Headlights appeared in the distance, cutting through the darkness. A car was coming down the road, fast.
"Help!" Dani screamed, waving her arms wildly. "Please, help us!"
Marcus's eyes flickered toward the approaching car, his smile faltering for the first time. The headlights grew brighter as the car sped closer, and in that moment, Marcus seemed to waver, his form flickering like a broken image.
The car screeched to a halt just a few feet away from them, and the driver—a middle-aged man with wide, terrified eyes—leaned out of the window. "Get in! Hurry!"
Jayden didn't hesitate. He grabbed Dani and Mya, pulling them toward the car. They scrambled inside, slamming the door shut just as Marcus lunged toward them, his face twisted in rage.
The car peeled away, tires screeching against the pavement. Dani looked back through the rear window, her heart still pounding in her chest. Marcus stood in the middle of the road, his glowing eyes watching them as they sped away into the night.
They had escaped—for now.
But Dani knew deep down, the nightmare was far from over.
