[R&P] Chapter 1: The Sidekick

You are currently sitting in Meh Burger. You're eating your fries as you notice a poster taped up on one of the poles. After standing up and walking to it, you lean closer a bit to inspect it.

"Sidekick tryouts. All qualified candidates are welcome. The best candidate gets the job. Resume and references required."
Place of audition: Sonic's Shack."

After a few seconds of scanning the poster, you stand straight up with your gaze shifting to the pathway down to the beach and to the hedgehog's shack.

"Why'd he be needing a new partner? Didn't he have that fox.." You wonder to yourself as you sit back down and finish your fries at your table.

Once you finished your fries, you stood up, grabbed your hoverboard and made your way down to Sonic's shack by the beach.

After finally making your way down to the beach, you take a glance at the line. Sighing, you walk straight up to the doorless entrance and just peek in.

"Congratulations! You're the fourth candidate!" A voice shouted as a certain blue hedgehog stands in the stack, pointing at you with a slightly annoyed smirk.

You sigh and just shrug, holding your hoverboard in your arms as you follow Sonic and the other candidates to a hill.

【Timeskip】

You were now standing on a hill, mounted onto your hoverboard as you watched Sonic explain.

"All right, being my sidekick is no easy task. This competition will test your strength, stamina, and endurance. The winner will be whoever makes it-" Sonic had started, however, was rudely interrupted.

"Actually, it's 'Whomever'." The beavee spoke out, correcting Sonic before quieting down again.

You let out a sigh as he pinched the bridge of your nose in annoyance. Sonic simply shot the beaver a glare before he continued.

"The winner will be whomever makes it through all of the unimaginable hardships and brings me that red flag, I planted atop the incredibly dangerous but inaccurately named Mount Safety." Sonic spoke as he paced behind everyone, a hand on his chin.

"This should be interesting.." You mumble to yourself just under your breath.

"Well, actually-" The beaver spoke up, only to be pushed off the hill and down the path by Sonic, who had a look of annoyance on his face. He gestured for the rest of us to follow suit.

"Pfft-" You quietly snickered as you leaned forward, descending down the hill and onto the pathway.

You raced, using your hoverboard to avoid obstacles and to make sharp turns. You make a quick glance over to your right, noticing two of the other candidates fighting each other. You just laugh before boosting up your speed by crouching forward slightly on your hoverboard, gaining ahead in the race.

After a few more turns and twists, you hop off your hoverboard, grabbing it and climbing up into a plane you are lent for the race. You make sure you're securely in, putting your hoverboard in the seat behind as you started the plane and took off to the sky.

As you get into flight, you hear a distant scream. Most likely from the beaver, he was too annoying, anyway. You smirk just as you notice the other two candidates in the air, rolling your eyes.

"Give up, you guys! This job is rightfully mine!" The two-tailed fox shouted from his plane, flying just between me and the other candidate.

"'Rightfully' yours? Jeez, I wonder why you're being replaced.." You say outloud in response to the fox, lowering your plane and flying underneath the fox and other candidate.

"Yeah, it's mine and that's just rude!" The fox shouted back, looking down at you for a brief second before looking back over at the other candidate as they spoke up.

"I'm not here to be Sonic's sidekick, you nincompoops! I'm here to get rid of you pests, once and for all!" The other candidate in the red suit shouted in response. You just sigh, rolling your eyes.

"I think it's clear who the island villain is." You snicker out, focusing ahead of you before losing balance of the plane. You look over at a wing, only to see a metallic claw grabbed on.

"Hey! Now, that's just rotten!" You shout in anger, pulling the wheel sharply right to pull the claw from the red-dressed candidate's plane.

"They don't call me a rotten egg for nothing!" The red-suited candidate shouted out in response just as the metallic claw on your plane was released and retracted back.

Annoyed, you roll your eyes. Your plane starts to hiccup in the air, slowly descending down as control of it was lost. You ended up spiraling down to the forest, having your plane crash in a clearing. However, just before you hit the ground, you grabbed your hoverboard and jumped from the plane. Using your hoverboard to land safely, you notice the red-dressed candidate attacking the fox's plan just as they land themselves by a frozen pond.

"Oh, no! I am not losing this race!" You hiss out under your breath as you kick on your hoverboard, zooming towards the river with competition.

As you reach the lake, Sonic and the fox was huffing as they stood on the grass, watching as the red-dressed guy flee.

"I have so many questions." You blurt out, looking over at the hedgehog and fox.

Sonic and the fox looked over at you as you spoke out, chuckling as they sat down and patted the grass patch between the two. You smirk as you walk over and sit down on the grass patch.

"Lemme hear 'em!" Sonic said, giving you a gentle nudge with his elbow.

"Well, first off.. What are the hours like?" You say, looking between the fox and Sonic.

"It's seven days a week, but you get your own planes." Sonic replied as he smile with his iconic hedgehog smile.

"Thanks but I prefer my feet on the ground. Well.. More so hovering above." You say with a chuckle, gesturing to your hoverboard that laid idly behind you.

"That's understandable. I may be able to actually upgrade your hoverboard for you if you don't mind!" The fox said with a smile, his two tails flicking as he sat.

"Ooh, that sounds nice actually. By the way, I'm (Y/n)!" You respond, holding a hand out respectively.

"And I'm Tails! Nice to meet you (Y/n)." Tails said as he shook your hand with a nod

"Right back at you." You say, nodding back.

"How about you join the team with us, (Y/n)? You seem pretty good." Sonic suggested, crackling quietly as he watched the interaction between Tails and you.

"Me? On Team Sonic? Heck yeah!" You shout excitedly, throwing a fist up into the air with excitement.

Sonic and Tails laughed, joining along with the excitement.
