"Are you going for the weekend retreat?" Jake asked Sophia.

"Maybe," she replied slowly.

"Linda and I are going. You should join us," Jake urged.

"I'll think about it," Sophia said as she stepped out of the gate of her college. Walking down the path in silence, she noticed that Jake had gone off with some other friends, leaving her alone.

Just a few steps away from her car, she suddenly froze, spotting a figure leaning casually against the wall. It was her ex-boyfriend, Ryan.

"Sophia!" he called out, a grin spreading across his face as he pushed himself off the wall and approached her.

Her heart sank. She hadn't seen Ryan since their breakup and had hoped it would stay that way.

"Uh, hey," she muttered, instinctively trying to sidestep him.

"Wait!" Ryan stepped into her path, blocking her way.

"Can we talk for a second?"

Sophia crossed her arms, annoyance, and wariness swirling within her.

"I don't think there's anything to talk about, Ryan."

"Come on, I just want to explain," he insisted, his voice softening as he tried to meet her gaze. "I miss you, Sophia. Can't we just—"

"No," she interrupted firmly, shaking her head. "You don't get to just swoop in and act like everything's fine. Your presence always feels like a burden. I've moved on, and you should do the same."

Ryan's expression shifted, frustration replacing the softness in his eyes.

"I still love you, Sophia. Can't you see that?"

She scoffed, the words burning on her tongue.

"You don't know what love is, Ryan. You only loved the idea of me. Your love was all about getting physical and fueled by lust."

A murmur rippled through a nearby group of students, some snickering at the exchange, their eyes darting between Sophia and Ryan. Heat rose in her cheeks, but she pressed on, refusing to back down.

"You think I'd forget how you treated me?" she continued, her voice steady. "You never respected me. You just wanted someone to fill your time."

Ryan's jaw clenched, his face darkening with anger.

"You're being ridiculous. You're just being dramatic because you're mad at me!"

"No, I'm being honest," Sophia shot back, her heart racing. "And you need to hear it. I'm done with this. I don't want you in my life anymore."

"Fine! But don't think this is over," Ryan retorted, his voice rising and drawing more attention. "I'll make you regret saying that. Just wait!"

A chill ran down Sophia's spine at the threat in his words.

"Are you serious? Do you think you can intimidate me into coming back? That's pathetic, Ryan."

"Pathetic?" he laughed, a harsh sound devoid of humor.

"You think you're so above it all now. But I won't forget this. You've insulted me in front of everyone, and I won't take it lightly," Ryan said, anger spilling from him.

"I'm not afraid of you," Sophia shot back, turning to walk away.

Her heart raced as she tried to keep her posture composed, but the weight of Ryan's threat lingered, heavy and unsettling.

"Hey, are you okay?" a voice broke through her thoughts. It was Ella, approaching with concern etched on her face.

"I—yeah, I'm fine," Sophia replied, though she could hear the tremor in her voice.

"Did he say something to you?" Ella asked, her eyes narrowing as she looked in Ryan's direction.

Sophia shook her head, trying to brush it off. "Just the same old nonsense. I told him I've moved on, and he didn't take it well."

"I can't believe he had the nerve to confront you like that," Ella said, her tone protective. "You don't need him in your life."

"I know," Sophia replied, her heart still racing. "It's just—why can't he understand that I'm done? I can't keep letting him hold power over me."

Ella placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You stood up for yourself. That's what matters. Don't let his words get to you. He's just angry because he knows you're right."

Sophia took a deep breath, trying to regain her composure. "You're right. I just wish he'd leave me alone for good. I don't want to keep dealing with his drama."

"Let's go get some ice cream," Ella suggested, trying to lighten the mood. "We can celebrate your newfound freedom."

Sophia nodded. "Okay, that sounds perfect. I could use a treat after all that."

But even as they headed toward the café, a small part of her couldn't shake the feeling that Ryan's anger was far from over and that the shadow of his wrath would linger, waiting for the right moment to strike.
