Sophia stood outside Ella's house, the sun filtering through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the walkway.
"Let's see Ella... I hope she's doing better," Sophia murmured to herself as she stepped out of her car.
She had come to visit her best friend, Ella, who hadn't been at school for over a week. Ella had been in a minor accident—not too serious, but enough to keep her stuck in bed.
After a moment, Sophia knocked on the door, her heart racing with anticipation.
"Come in," a voice called from inside.
Sophia opened the door and stepped in, spotting Ella sitting up in bed, propped up with pillows, a blanket draped over her legs.
"Hey, Sophia!" Ella said excitedly as she saw her friend standing in the doorway.
"Ella!" Sophia rushed over and wrapped her in a gentle hug. "I've been so worried about you!"
"I'm fine, really," Ella replied, her eyes shining with affection. "Just a little bored and a lot restless. Come sit with me!"
Sophia plopped down on the edge of the bed, feeling a wave of relief at seeing Ella in good spirits.
"I brought you some books and your favorite snacks! We can have a little movie marathon."
"Sounds perfect," Ella grinned. "I need the distraction or I might die of boredom."
"That's why I'm here, to save you," Sophia laughed.
As they chatted, Sophia caught movement from the corner of her eye. Turning slightly, she saw Gabriel Westbrook walking up the path to Ella's house. Her stomach knotted.
"Wait, what's he doing here?" she whispered, feeling a wave of anxiety.
"Gabriel? Oh, he comes by sometimes," Ella said nonchalantly, taking a bite of her grilled sandwich. "Dad's on the legal team for his company."
Sophia's heart raced. "So, he just... drops by?"
"Yeah, it's not a big deal. Why?" Ella asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Just—never mind," Sophia muttered, trying to hide how much Gabriel's presence affected her. She wasn't ready to admit how seeing him made her feel.
She wanted to step outside and catch a closer look at Gabriel, but she didn't know how to without seeming out of place. Gabriel was probably meeting with Ella's dad, and she couldn't just barge in.
She was lost in her thoughts when the door to Ella's room opened, and a maid stepped in.
"Dinner is served. You both should join everyone at the dining table."
"Okay, we're coming," Ella said, glancing at Sophia, who had already stood up.
"Help me up," Ella said, extending her hand.
"Of course," Sophia replied, turning to assist Ella from the bed.
A few minutes later, Ella and Sophia were seated at the dining table, listening to the conversation between Gabriel and Mr. Steve, Ella's dad.
"Did you see the new development proposal?" Gabriel asked, his voice steady and confident.
"Yeah, it has great potential," Ella's dad replied. "But we'll need to make sure everything aligns with zoning laws."
Sophia watched Gabriel, but he barely glanced her way. Since she sat down, he'd only given her a brief look before focusing entirely on Steve, making her feel completely invisible. She stole glances at him, her heart sinking with each passing moment of his indifference.
Leaning forward slightly, Sophia traced the rim of her glass with her fingers, her voice casual but curious.
"I've heard you've made quite a name for yourself in business circles, Mr. Westbrook. Is it true what they say about your latest venture?" She smiled, tilting her head just enough to catch his eye, hoping her words would spark his interest.
Her gaze, bright and full of admiration, was a subtle effort to bridge the gap between them, despite the obvious difference in age and experience.
But Gabriel barely spared her a glance, his attention still fixed on Steve. His silence was deafening, hanging between them like a wall Sophia couldn't breach.
The rejection hit Sophia hard, leaving her feeling small and insignificant. She had hoped to spark even a flicker of interest, to find a crack in his cold exterior, but his indifference only deepened the distance.
"Excuse me for a moment," she said quietly, standing from the table with a forced, polite smile.
As Sophia excused herself, her smile faltered, barely hiding the sting of rejection. She'd spent the whole evening trying to catch Gabriel's attention, but his cold demeanor made it clear—she was nothing more than background noise in his world. Her heart weighed heavy as she ascended the grand staircase, frustration and disappointment swirling in her mind.
Reaching the landing, her focus slipped for a moment. Her heel skidded against the polished marble, and in an instant, she felt herself teetering backward, arms flailing in panic. But before she could fall, a hand shot out, gripping her wrist firmly and pulling her upright.
"Hey, watch out," Gabriel's voice came in a low, urgent whisper, filled with a concern she hadn't expected. His grip was strong and steady, and for the first time all evening, his piercing gaze was fixed solely on her. He pulled her close, steadying her as she pressed against his chest.
For a moment, the world around them dissolved. She was acutely aware of the warmth radiating from his body, the faint scent of his cologne, and the quickened rhythm of his breath mingling with hers. Her heart raced, not from the near fall but from the unexpected closeness.
Their eyes locked, and in the soft light, Gabriel's cool facade cracked just slightly. There was a flicker of something raw—something Sophia hadn't seen before. She barely registered how her hand rested on his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath her palm.
"Careful," he murmured, his voice softer now, a strange tenderness in his words. His other hand had settled lightly on her waist, as though he wasn't quite ready to let go.
The tension between them shifted, charged with an intimacy neither had anticipated. Sophia's lips parted, searching for something to say, but all she could do was look up at him, her breath catching as her gaze lingered on the strong line of his jaw, the way his mouth hovered so close to hers.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Her cheeks flushed, but it wasn't embarrassment this time—it was an unmistakable pull of desire.
Gabriel blinked as if trying to snap out of the moment. He took a step back, his hand falling away from her waist, leaving a lingering warmth on her skin. He ran a hand through his dark hair, his expression hardening again.
"Be more careful next time," he muttered, his tone slipping back to the aloof businessman she'd met earlier. But there was no mistaking the tension that still hung between them.
Sophia stood frozen, heart pounding, as he turned and walked away, leaving her breathless and unsure of what had just happened.
As she stood there, the moments of their brief contact played over in her mind, a whirlwind of emotions crashing over her.
"I was just in Gabriel's arms," she thought with a rush of delight.
The feelings of rejection had vanished, replaced by the memory of Gabriel's arms around her. It felt surreal, yet so real at the same time.
Finally shaking herself out of her stupor, Sophia took a deep breath and headed back downstairs, still trying to reconcile the feelings swirling inside her.
"Will I ever be able to breach the cold walls he's put up?" she wondered silently.
The question lingered in her mind as she rejoined Ella and her father, trying to mask the confusion brewing in her heart.
