Yn stepped inside her apartment, her shoes leaving wet imprints on the hardwood floor as the door clicked shut behind her. The warmth of the room felt like a distant memory compared to the cold, biting rain still clinging to her skin. She shook her head, trying to shake off the unease, but the tremor in her hands wouldn't stop.
Oli, her cat, greeted her with a soft meow, rubbing against her legs . She had just adopted him a year ago . She dropped her soaked coat onto the floor, then knelt down to scoop him up into her arms. His weight was comforting, grounding her in a way that nothing else could. She carried him to the kitchen, setting him down by his food dish. The familiar sound of kibble hitting the metal bowl was almost soothing, but her mind was elsewhere—still reeling from the call, that voice.
She glanced at the phone on the counter, the last message still haunting her. “I’ll be your worst nightmare, Yn.” Her breath caught in her throat again as the words echoed through her head.
Get a grip, she told herself. She wasn’t going to cry. She wouldn’t let herself break. Not this time. It was too dangerous. She’d cried enough in the past, let herself feel weak and exposed. She couldn’t afford that anymore—not with everything that had happened, not with everything that was still happening.
She stood up, wiping her hands on her jeans as she moved through the apartment. She locked the windows, one by one, her fingers moving with practiced speed. She didn't want to admit it, but she was paranoid. Every shadow outside her window seemed darker, deeper, as though something was watching her. Something was out there.
With each click of a lock, the tension in her chest seemed to ease, but the fear never fully went away. She couldn't stop thinking about those calls. They'd started a week ago, strange numbers, distorted voices. At first, she had laughed them off—pranks, wrong numbers, nothing to worry about. But tonight felt different. The voice... it knew her name. It felt like something more, something dangerous.
She felt as if she knew the voice but couldn't figure out from where . The person's voice sounded deep, but it definitely belonged to a female . Yn thought it's best to just wait another day . If the calls don't stop, she's going to the police station. She locked the last door and stood there for a moment, pressing her forehead against the cool wood. I’m not going to break. She repeated softly to herself.
But the words felt hollow. It was so easy to promise herself that, so hard to believe it. She wasn’t sure how much longer she could keep pretending. In the safety of her home, she could let her guard down, but even here, it felt like there was something lurking just outside her reach.
She pushed that thought away , she was too tired to constantly let it occupy her mind so she just decided to take a quick shower and return to the comfort of her bed , but first she had to eat something. So she walked towards the small kitchen , opened the fridge and saw a chocolate cake , poorly decorated but it didn't matter . She quickly took it out and saw that there was a sticky note attached that read
"Happy birthday YN I LOVE YOU SOOO MUCH , (im sorry i couldn't make it , but i made this and i hope this counts) have fun girl , live your life you're only gonna be 23 for a year,
Love MAE, your sexy best friend. "

I couldn't help but crack a smile , my lips turning up . She made a cake for me. Even though she's not made for the kitchen, she still tried her best. These little gestures always made me feel grateful, but now i was kind of feeling bad to think that no one cared , Someone out there does care, even if there is only one person who cares. It meant a lot to me . I quickly grabbed a spoon and took a bite ....yeah, Mae, you definitely aren't made to bake
I laughed .
I took the note and put it in my drawer and put the " i hope you get diabetes cake" back in the fridge. And made my way to the shower .
While walking towards the closet to grab my pajamas and a tank top, my head started to pound, and i just felt super dizzy . It felt as if i was seeing millions of flashes at the same time . I stopped and held onto the dressing chair for support.Author pov
As she stood there, her head tilted back , her eyes closed as if she was experiencing the worst pain possible .
