Chapter 4

The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon when Namjoon regretted his decision to let Taehyung and Jungkook ride in the same car. He adjusted his grip on the steering wheel as Taehyung leaned over the center console, waving a half-eaten bag of chips in Jungkook’s face.

“Try it, Kook! It’s honey butter. You’ll love it.”

Jungkook swatted the bag away with an exaggerated grimace. “No way, Tae. The last time you said I’d love something, it was that dried squid you smuggled into the dorms. Never again.”

“That was a cultural experience!” Taehyung protested, shoving a chip into his own mouth.

Namjoon sighed loudly. “Can you two sit still for five minutes? This is a car, not a playground.”

“It’s not my fault!” Jungkook pointed accusingly at Taehyung. “He’s the one who won’t stop being weird.”

“Being weird is my charm,” Taehyung declared proudly, leaning back and kicking his legs up on the dashboard.

“Get your feet down!” Namjoon barked.

Taehyung obeyed with a pout but quickly turned to Jimin, who had his earbuds in, trying to stay out of the chaos. “Hey, Jimin, don’t you think Namjoon’s starting to sound like our old gym teacher? You know, the one who always yelled about posture?”

Jimin smirked but didn’t look up. “At least the gym teacher didn’t have to drive us anywhere.”

Namjoon muttered something under his breath about being surrounded by children.

Meanwhile, Jungkook had taken out his phone and was now filming Taehyung dramatically eating another chip. “Ladies and gentlemen, here we have a rare specimen of chaos, also known as Kim Taehyung. Notice how he eats like he hasn’t seen food in years.”

Taehyung immediately struck a pose, holding the chip delicately between his fingers and pretending to savor it like fine wine. “Ah, yes, the honey butter chip. A complex bouquet of artificial flavors and preservatives.”

Jungkook laughed, nearly dropping his phone.

“Both of you, stop distracting me,” Namjoon snapped. “I’m trying to focus on the road.”

“Namjoon-hyung, you’re always focused on the road,” Taehyung teased. “Relax a little. What’s the worst that could happen?”

“A lot,” Namjoon deadpanned.

“Yeah, like you getting thrown out of the car,” Jimin added, finally pulling out an earbud.

“Wow, Jimin, I expected support from you,” Taehyung said, clutching his chest dramatically. “Et tu, Brutus?”

“Don’t drag Shakespeare into this,” Jimin said with a snort.

The banter continued for another hour, punctuated by Namjoon’s increasingly exasperated sighs. At one point, Taehyung tried to convince Jungkook to sing a duet with him, but Jungkook refused, claiming his “golden voice” was too valuable to waste on car karaoke

“That’s fine,” Taehyung said with a mischievous grin. “I’ll just serenade you instead.” He launched into an impromptu ballad about Jungkook’s refusal to try new snacks, complete with dramatic gestures.

“You’re so weird, man,” Jungkook muttered, though he couldn’t hide his grin.

Namjoon finally pulled the car over at a rest stop, turning around in his seat to glare at them. “Listen up. We’re supposed to be professionals. Can you at least pretend to take this seriously for five minutes?”

Taehyung and Jungkook exchanged sheepish looks but couldn’t help snickering when Jimin muttered, “Good luck with that.”

Namjoon’s phone buzzed just as he was about to launch into another lecture. He glanced at the screen and frowned. “It’s Park Jae-Min,” he said, answering the call and putting it on speaker.

The voice that came through was sharp and cocky. “Namjoon! Finally, someone competent picks up. I was starting to think you’d gone soft.”

Namjoon pinched the bridge of his nose. “What do you want, Director Park?”

“Oh, nothing major. Just a world-ending problem, no big deal,” Jae-Min replied, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “We’ve detained four individuals. They’ve been exhibiting… unusual abilities. Dangerous, potentially catastrophic. I need your team of psychotherapists to assess the situation.”

The humor drained from the car as the four exchanged wary glances.

“What kind of abilities?” Jimin asked.

“You’ll see soon enough,” Jae-Min said. “But there’s one name that might catch your interest: Yn.”

The air grew thick with tension. Jungkook sat up straighter, his earlier laughter replaced by a sharp focus.

“Yn?” he repeated, his voice tense.

“Yes,” Jae-Min said smugly. “She’s at the center of all this. I suggest you get here quickly.”

The line went dead, leaving the group in stunned silence.

Namjoon finally broke the quiet. “Buckle up. We’ve got work to do.”

Jungkook stared out the window, his jaw tight. Whatever this was, he wasn’t going to take it lightly. Not when Yn was involved.
