As the laughter from Otsubara and Glass Jensen's playful struggle died down, a strange vibration shook the floor beneath them. It was subtly at first, like a deep, low hum, but it steadily grew stronger. Reno glanced at the others, his brows furrowing in confusion.
Ibarra, who had been engrossed in his trinkets, quickly stood up, his expression serious. "No, this isn't just a tremor. I've lived here long enough to know Bardin's earth doesn't just shake without reason. Could it be...?"
The sand beneath the city began to shift more violently. Outside the windows, the streets trembled, and in the distance, the towering dunes swayed unnaturally. Merchants on the streets panicked in terror as shops and stalls collapsed with ease. The party rushed to the window just in time to see a torrent of sand rising into the air, almost like a geyser.
"What the hell is that?" Otsubara whispered, her eyes wide.
As they stared out at the strange spectacle, they noticed faint, glowing symbols appearing on the city walls. These were not markings any of them had seen before—strange, twisted shapes that pulsed with an unnatural light, etching themselves deeper into the stone walls of buildings as if the city was alive.
The tremors intensified. Suddenly, the ground outside Ibarra's residence began to split. With a loud, thunderous crack, a large rocky monolith shot up from the earth, towering over the nearby buildings. An ancient, jagged structure covered in the same, strange markings that glowed faintly in the night.
"What in the skies..." Glass muttered.
"This is no ordinary environmental catastrophe," exclaimed Ibarra.
Roxanne, Glass, Reno, and Otsubara stepped out into the cold night air to investigate. The tremors died down and the glowing markings died down leaving black etches in the stone. The shifting sands returned to their original state. All was quiet, again, but now with the presence of the great rock spire.
Ibarra followed them out. "Glass, do you still remember Hero's Pillar in the city center?"
"Yes, quite well," the sky pirate replied.
"These two are different yet the same," informed Ibarra, "it has to be!"
Reno approached the monolith cautiously, attempting to read the markings. Alas, he failed. "What sort of language is this?"
"They are wurm runes," replied Ibarra.
The monolith suddenly began to vibrate, and, without even the slightest warning, it unleashed a barrage of magical attacks from thin air. Crackling lightning shot out, arcing through the air with a blinding flash. Fiery tendrils surged forth, searing the ground and creating swirling columns of flame. Chilling blasts of ice followed, freezing patches of sand and causing a bit of cold to permeate the air.
The party scrambled to evade the onslaught. Roxanne swiftly ducked behind a nearby merchant's stall, while Glass and Otsubara deftly maneuvered to avoid the elemental assaults. Reno quickly unsheathed his sword and blocked an incoming ice chunk and then dived to the ground and rolled away from a searing arc of fire. He slid into cover beside Roxanne, both now huddled behind the stall to avoid a lightning bolt that cackled overhead.
"What sort of rock pillar has magical powers," said Reno, gritting his teeth.
From a distance, Otsubara and Glass drew their pistols and exchanged a quick glance. In unison, the pair fired upon the monolith. The bullets almost hit the stone but were stopped short by a blue barrier and were absorbed, almost as if the monolith had a shield equipped. The shield disappeared when the threat subsided. It retaliated with another barrage of elemental attacks all of which the slick sky pirate and kitsune avoided with ease. They dove into cover beside Reno and Roxanne.
