Happy birthday

It's time. The time she's been waiting for is finally here.

Once everyone gathered around the cake, her dad took out a lighter to light the candles. Her birthday cake was the shape of a tree. Her grandma was an excellent baker, so she always baked Betty's cakes.

"Happy birthday to you."

They all started singing. Something about it was always so awkward about this part.

"Happy birthday to you."

"Happy birthday to Betty."

"Happy birthday to you."

Everyone clapped and cheered while waiting for Betty to make her wish and blow out the candles. Betty thought awhile for this wish.

"I wish James and I could spend the summer together." Betty mumbled under her breath. Then she blew out the candles.

Everyone clapped and cheered again, then went back to what they were doing before. Not long before, Betty's mom called them back again for presents. Betty knew exactly which one she wanted to save for last.

After opening presents, there was one more left. Betty picked it up in anticipation. It was James's gift. When she opened it, her jaw was on the floor. It was something simple, but she held it, dear to her.

It was a cardigan. The cardigan she's been wanting forever. She couldn't believe she was holding it, and neither did anyone else. Cardigans were special in her family. She immediately looked at James.

Betty went straight to James and hugged him tight.

"Thank you! Thank you so much."

"Of course, Betty. I wanted to get the best for you."

It was after the party when James started helping Betty pick up the party.

"Thanks for helping James."

"Of course. See you tomorrow."

"See you tomorrow."

That night, she slept with her cardigan on. The best part was that it had James's cologne on it. The cardigan was comfy and cozy. She slept well that night.
