There's one thing I look forward to less every summer, and that's the first day of school. Its been the same way ever since I can remember. What makes worse, is that now that I'm in high school, it means I get picked on more, way more. I can also count on one hand, actually, make that one finger, how many friends I have, so I don't exactly have an army at my disposal.
Oh, and did I mention that the teachers and other staff at this school aren't any help at all? They'd rather turn a blind eye at someone getting picked on, than do the right thing and actually keep the troublemakers in line. This year started off no differently than other years have, I met up with my best friend Alex Mayfield, who by the way, was my only friend in the entire school, who happened to be a girl.
Don't get me wrong, I love Alex like a sister. She's not afraid to step up to somebody who's being a jerk to one of her friends, and she doesn't care how big, or how tough someone thinks they are, she'll knock you down a few pegs if she thinks you're getting a little bit too big for your britches. Alex is also super popular, something I would give anything for, she knows anyone and everyone.
She's also the girl to get the scoop on all the latest news and gossip going around the school. She knows who's coming, who's going, when all the dances are, who's dating who, et cetera. Unfortunately, there was one person in particular she didn't know about, my arch enemy, by the name of Gene Mayberry.
Gene was one of those guys who did everything in school but what you're supposed to do. He never went to class, and if he did, all he did was make trouble and disrupt any chance he got. After the bell for first period rang, Alex and I no sooner got in the hallway, that Gene ran up behind me, then smacked me in the back of the head, sending all the books I was carrying crashing to the floor.
"Gene! Do you think you could be a bit more compassionate and leave Mike alone for once?" Alex snapped.
"Why would I do that? The little wuss makes it too easy to pick on him! Besides, what could he do to me?" Gene said, laughing.
"You just wait Gene! One of these days you're going to try that on the wrong person, then we'll see who the tough guy is!" I yelled.
Gene walked back, getting in my face, "You even think of getting anybody after me, that'll be the last thing you EVER do!".
With that, Gene pushed me to the floor as hard as he could, knocking all the books I'd just picked up out of my arms again. Alex helped me up, then helped me pick my books up. Just then, Mr.Andrews, the school principal, who was another person who'd rather turn a blind eye to a student than do the right thing, began yelling at Alex and I to get up off the floor, then get to class.
"We need to find you a posse to have your back when that blockhead Gene gets in your face again, someone who will make him think twice for picking on you, and I think I know just the guy." Alex said.
"Face it Alex, no student here would even think of having my back. Gene would just mess things up anyway." I replied.
"Oh, I don't think he would. I know of somebody who just might be the person for the job." Alex said.
"Who?" I asked.
"You'll find out at lunch." Alex said, a wicked grin on her face, which only meant one thing, she had a plan.
