The Wedding Day
Millicent had tried her best to avoid Veronica since the engagement was announced, but the wedding day was inevitable. The grand event was held in a sprawling garden, the kind that looked straight out of a fairytale.
Twinkling lights hung from towering trees, while white and gold flowers lined the aisle. Guests in elegant attire filled the space, their chatter creating a soft hum.
Millicent sat in the third row, close enough to see everything but far enough to avoid being pulled into the spotlight. Beside her, Calista reached over to hold her hand, a small gesture of reassurance.
“You don’t have to look so tense,” Calista whispered, leaning closer.
“I’m fine,” Millicent lied, her gaze fixed on the altar.
Veronica appeared moments later, gliding down the aisle in a gown that seemed to sparkle under the golden evening light. Her beauty was undeniable, and her confident smirk as she locked eyes with Millicent for a brief moment made Millicent’s stomach churn.
Edward stood waiting at the altar, oblivious to the undercurrent of tension between his bride and his sister. The ceremony proceeded without a hitch, vows exchanged, rings slipped onto fingers, and finally, the kiss that sealed their union. Applause erupted around them, but Millicent felt like she couldn’t breathe.

Days after the wedding, Millicent learned of her parents’ decision.
“She needs to stay here,” her father said over breakfast, his tone leaving little room for argument. “Veronica’s family situation is complicated. It’s better for her to be with us.”
Millicent slammed her coffee cup onto the table. “Are you serious? She’s married now. She doesn’t need to live here.”
Her mother sighed, placing a gentle hand on her husband’s arm. “It’s not just about her. Edward travels frequently for work, and it’s important for her to feel supported. Besides, this is her family now too.”
“This is ridiculous,” Millicent snapped. “I won’t have her disrupting my life.”
Her father frowned, his voice turning stern. “This isn’t up for discussion, Millicent. Veronica will stay here, and I expect you to be civil.”
Millicent’s jaw tightened. “Fine. But don’t expect me to pretend I’m okay with this.”

For a while, things seemed to settle. Millicent focused on her work and spent her free time with Calista, cherishing their dates and quiet moments together. She avoided Veronica as much as possible, thankful for the mansion’s size, which made it easy to steer clear of her.
One evening, after a particularly wonderful date with Calista, Millicent returned home feeling content. But as she pulled into the driveway, her smile faded. Cars filled the courtyard, and lights spilled out from every window.
“What the hell is going on?” she muttered, parking in the garage.
Inside, the house was buzzing with activity. Relatives, family friends, and even Edward’s colleagues filled the space, laughing and chatting. Millicent forced a polite smile as she made her way through the crowd, ignoring the curious glances thrown her way.
