A Web of Lies Unraveled

Millicent froze under Calista's burning gaze, her pulse pounding in her ears. The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in on her as Calista slammed the envelope onto the table, scattering its contents. The photo of her and Veronica in an intimate moment stared back at her, damning evidence of her betrayal.

"Explain this," Calista demanded again, her voice trembling but no less fierce.

Millicent opened her mouth, but no words came. She glanced at Veronica, who stood silent, her usual confidence gone.

"I..." Millicent stammered. "It's complicated."

"Complicated?" Calista's laugh was sharp and humorless. "You're my girlfriend, Mill! And you're sneaking around with her! My brother's wife, for God’s sake!"

Veronica stepped forward, her tone calm but firm. "Calista, this isn’t entirely Millicent’s fault—"

"Stay out of this!" Calista snapped, her eyes flashing with fury. "You don't get to defend her. You’re just as guilty!"

The tension in the room was suffocating. Millicent reached for Calista, desperate to salvage what she could. "Calista, please, let me explain—"

"Don’t touch me," Calista hissed, stepping back. Tears shimmered in her eyes, but her anger overshadowed her pain. "You’ve made your choice, Millicent. And it wasn’t me."

Calista stormed out, slamming the door behind her. Millicent stood frozen, the weight of her actions crashing down on her. Veronica placed a hand on her shoulder, but Millicent shrugged it off.

"This is a disaster," Millicent muttered, pacing the room.

Veronica crossed her arms, her expression unreadable. "You knew this would happen eventually. Secrets never stay buried."

Millicent whirled on her, anger flaring. "You don’t get to act like this doesn’t affect you. You’re part of this mess, too!"

Veronica’s lips curved into a wry smile. "Oh, I’m very aware. But unlike you, I don’t regret it."

Before Millicent could respond, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. Her father entered, his expression grave.

"Millicent," he said, his voice low. "We need to talk. Now."

The dining room was tense, her parents seated at the head of the table. Millicent stood before them, feeling like a child being scolded. Veronica lingered in the doorway, her presence a silent reminder of everything that had gone wrong.

Her father sighed, rubbing his temples. "This family has endured its fair share of scandals, but this? This is beyond anything I could have imagined."

"Father, I—"

"Do you realize what you've done?" her mother interjected, her voice sharp. "You’ve jeopardized Edward’s marriage, humiliated Calista, and brought shame to this family!"

Millicent clenched her fists, her voice rising. "I didn’t plan for this to happen! Do you think I wanted this chaos?"

"You should’ve controlled yourself!" her father snapped, slamming his hand on the table. "You’ve put us all in an impossible position."
