Fear that cages.
There was this unspoken rule in your family—that you as the duckling would stay put, allow yourself to be dolled up in whites and pinks, let yourself be cocooned in parental affection until you couldn't taste the air anymore.
You were taught that good deeds and a bright smile would bring you far—further than anyone else in life. That a pure heart and a big idea was all it took for you to suceed, because you were the baby duck, a darling little thing engulfed in cotton since birth. And as the little one—the one that should never leave the nest that your parents were keen to preserve—you were dotted on and told to not worry, that you could achieve anything with a goal.
So why couldn't you have done this one simple thing?
Say no.
Since childhood, as the family's freshest addition, you had been spoon-fed and pampered, but now, as an adult, you realized even that had come with a bitter price to pay. The longer your were kept wrapped up like a pretty present for display—the less space you were left to breath, until quickly the loose ribbon that adored you, cut off your circulation and left you to struggle; and the more you fought against the chirping in the back of your ear, the more you lost yourself in a myriad of identity—until you forgot that you could say no at all.
"Eve was born from a part of Adam, and as one they ought to stay together as man and woman birthed from the same godly hand"
So perhaps that was why, everything fell in place so perfectly the moment you met him. The monster lingering in the back of your mind, tempting and luring you to defy the routine you had grown to enjoy.
"And as Eve grasped the apple, plucked it from the twig reaching down to her, she tasted the first sin to ever exist and became conscious of all evil in the new-formed world—and so the coaxing silver-tongued monster slithered down to engrave itself into her skin, becoming one with the cheater."
And so the monster in the back of your mind manifested, gave you the first taste of succulent poison, and etched himself into your very skin, into your very being.
"And humankind was damned, bound to mortal's needs of the flesh."
It was an easy job after it slipped your mind, that you had a choice, albeit little, like Eve, you too were too blinded by the strangeness of it all and forgot to flinch back as the fire of damnation consumed you.
"Love, you're lost again, aren't ya?" the soft voice cooed behind you. Soft, no. He could never be soft nor gentle. No, the monster whispering into your ear from behind, keeping his arm around your midrift, could never be soft.
"Sorry, my wife she's been through a tough phase and—" bullshit you were doing just fine before the beast came and claimed your life as property and thorns etched into the beauty of your heart to sullen it. "—she's currently on some anti-depressants and sometimes she just gets a little lost." he eased out the wrinkles between the eldery woman's brows, while the graying man nodded along. So—with a last sympathic look from the woman and kindly offered words—your one chance of fleeting freedom fell through your fingers like warm sand on a summer's day.
"Love, come along now. Our home is this way, remember?" he purred, honeying your fried brain, putting on the very mask that had put you into this dilemma—the face of a handsome young man, when in reality he was everything but that. When in reality the arm keeping your sluggish body upright, was cruel and the hand that rested splayed across your waist was drenched in the blood of innocents.
"The serpent's tongue was enticing."
It truly was, swirling reality and careful fabricated illusions around to weave them together to keep you enclasped under his steady hand.
"After Eve had tasted the apple it was already too late—"
How true it was, as he forced your numb body through hell's door and down the stairs to the place that imprinted onto your skin with black and blues. He would call them flowers blooming across an empty canvas. How utterly cruelly poetic.
"—damnation befell her and with her the entire human race."
The crash felt biting as he let go off you per your weak murmured request—the ground not easing beneath your weight, not opening up to swallow you and save you as you were stripped to your truest form.
"Adam and Eve would now be forever aware of their sin."
Frost gnawed at you, the chill going up and down your spine, all as he hovered above you, staring down at the pitiful mutt at his feet, with that twinkle in his eyes that was worse than the humiliation of it all. "Didn't I tell you already—love—" the monster spat the words tasted like venom, "that I don't appreciate it, when you lie to others to gain sympathy?" twack. You felt your cheek pulse and flush with newfound warmth—at least you could still feel the loving caress of life.
"Since—" twack, another hit, "you still haven't learned your lesson. I will make you learn." your scalp burned as he, like a puppeteer moved you to his heart's contents. "Try one more time and you will be here in the basement forever as my dog." the monster spat out again, now grasping the chain connecting to your collar like it just meant to be this way, as he pulled and pushed, amusing himself with the sight of your bare form, kneeling at his feet, with his handprints to decorate each single inch of yours that could be covered.
"Love—" he kneeled and with him the guilt of never saying no, "look at me, sweetheart. You're my woman. Mine. We're meant to be, don't let those pesky thoughts of yours convince you otherwise." he licked you up—perhaps not physically, but spirituality, mentally, emotionally—he was lapping at your torn heart, savouring each droplet of blood.
"—just need a higher dosage, yeah, exactly. You're just a little confused, love." the demon hissed, after he had skinned you alive on his floors, after dragging you to a place worse than hell's pit of fire, after you had failed, failed to say no. The nightmare would never end.
