In the 2060's...
The Earth is devastated.
Half of the continents are now sunken under seawater, thanks to the effects of global warming, causing the ice to melt and the sea level to rise. Most of the animals have gone extinct, and the remaining species are on the verge of disappearing from history. There is trash and garbage everywhere you'd look, and the temperature is making everyone uncomfortable. To compensate for the heat, people have to live indoors with air conditioners working 24/7. The air is so polluted that nobody comes outdoors anymore...
And, the forest area is only over 50% compared to 40 years ago... Wait what?
The Amazon rainforest is completely unharmed. In fact, it is thriving as a rainforest, with the vegetations and ecosystem undamaged by the hands of humans. Endangered animals are often reported to be wandering around the rainforests.
The famous Amazon River still holds the notorious species of Piranhas, and the toucans are commonly seen staying high up in the canopy.
Unlike all the other places on Earth, the Amazon rainforest is completely unpolluted and uncontaminated.
This is actually the most habitable area on Earth, yet almost nobody lives here. Why? When popularization is literally bursting, and the population density is too high on all the other areas on Earth? Why doesn't humanity exploit this area for more spaces to live? Why don't they cut down the trees, kill all the animals and destroy the ecosystem here, like they have done to almost everywhere on the Earth?
... That is wrong. They really want to. It's just that they can't.
The rainforests are actually not habitable for humanity at all, because of a phenomenon often caused by something in the forests...
And this phenomenon causes all the electronic devices around the area to be destroyed... Except if they are gathered at a small place in the middle of the area. This place is suitable enough to live in.
... And as of right now, there is a huge blue light in the sky, caused by an enormous explosion that happened just the night before.
Yes, this is the phenomenon. And it comes from the 'small place in the middle' mentioned just a few seconds ago. Similar to the fact that the eye of a tornado is the most peaceful place inside of it, hmm?
Anyway, inside a gigantic mansion in the middle of that specific location inside the Amazons, a TV inside the mansion's living room is showing a news report introduction, and a man - who is wearing a white blouse and a T-shirt with black and white stripes- is watching it.
He is a young man, with black hair, and white skin color. Just the typical look most people have.

But, he grins all of a sudden, when the screen of the TV changes into a man wearing a suit. It seems like the man is going to broadcast some news.
"Welcome everyone, welcome back to our daily TV program: Daily Breaking News of The 2060s! The news today is "The Crazy Scientist Strikes Again!". As the name suggests, the notorious crazy scientist - Oxtra Narikami - had recently created another extremely enormous electrical explosion near the Amazon River, which caused vegetations on a 10 miles radius to be completely wiped from existence!" The man talks without stopping. "What is more, the remains of the explosion formed an electromagnetic field in the area, which is the main reason for the current blackout in the city! This substantially increased the crime rate, and citizens are complaining about Oxtra's illegal experiments and their effects on their lives! As for the police forces, they announced that they are still investigating the case at Oxtra's Laboratory under the surface of the Amazon River. Moving on to the next topic, the US authorities have decided to take actions to find the mysterious cause of the recent heatwave that completely wiped out a whole area, and scientists suspect that it's also Oxtra who caused it-"
"Mehhh. Those scientists are pushing the responsibilities on me again. I didn't cause such a heatwave! It was them who has destroyed nature so badly that it is affecting their lives, too!"
Oxtra turns off the TV with a remote controller and puts it in his pocket while grumbling about the news, then stands up from the sofa and stretches his body. "Aaaaaaaahhhhh... You know, Karole? I spent the last night for that explosion... Welp, make me 'nother cup of black coffee, please." Oxtra turns to - and walks to - a young woman behind the sofa.
A lovely tall, long-straight brown-haired girl, wearing an apron over a T-Shirt, turns her eyes toward the man.
"Tch. Again?! You are too lazy! Can't you make it yourself?" The girl rolled her eyes in disbelief.
"Oh, come on Karole! Just do it for me, please? I am too tired to do that, I'm not lazy! I'm going to check if there's an error with my equations-"
She stops him before he can say anything else. "That's just your new excuse for being too lazy to do little things again!" She shouts.
Oxtra widens his eyes. "Ehh, hehe... That's true, how did you know?" He sticks his tongue out and smiles. "But it's also the reason why I didn't wanna make coffee. I'm always doing all the scientific work here, you know? So, please make me the coffee, please? Karole?"
"No."
"Karrot?"
Karole sighs. "...Fine. I will make you a really hot cup of coffee, as you have always wanted."
"Yay, thanks! I love you!" He says in a grateful voice, then he thought to himself. "Wait, why do I have a bad feeling about this?"
Karole sighs once again. "Geez, I wish he actually does."
Oxtra pulls out the remote controller and turns on the TV. "Board mode, file number 17, please."
The TV turns into a board, and it's filled with number and letters. Then, Oxtra picks up a pen and looks at the board, while murmuring to himself.
"Hmm, there's nothing wrong with the equations, I suppose it's just a generator error. I hope the next time it'll create the portal..."
"By the way, Oxtra, what should we do with the electromagnetic field? I don't think it's a good idea to just... leave it there. And honestly, I think we should try to hide all the generators from the police." Karole asks while she is waiting for a cup of coffee to heat up.
Oxtra laughs, and he answers her question while still laying his eyes on the TV- Board. "Don't worry, it will be gone soon. I believe their technology is good enough to deal with it. After all, they nearly destroyed the world just to 'achieve new heights', so their so-called new heighs must at least be able to solve such a problem."
"Sounds about right. But they will definitely find those machines-" And Oxtra proceeds to interrupt her.
"-Besides, they won't find anything there, because those machines have been hidden really carefully. By me, of course, so no matter how advanced their technology is, they won't be able to find it." Oxtra stops and winks at Karole, then he continues. "As for those officers... Who cares about them? They are in the wrong lab. And also, if I just succeed in this final experiment I'm trying to conduct instead of causing another explosion, I won't be here to witness how they will try to arrest me."
He strongly emphasizes the word "me".
"I'm not too optimistic about that... They knew that it was you who caused the incident, right?"
"Ahahaha! Of course they knew it was me! I have caused so many troubles for them before, it's logical for them to think that it was the same man who caused this one! But, I am not going to do anything, and they can't do anything about it too, hehehe!" Oxtra does a devious smile. Karole just asks again in a bored voice. She clearly doesn't need to bother about him laughing.

"So... you won't be responsible for that?"
"Precisely."
"Eh... Alright. I won't judge you. How about the project? I have been following your orders for a long time... 8 years, isn't it? Anyway, I still don't really understand what you meant about it..." Indeed. This girl- Karole- has applied for the position of Oxtra's Lab Assistant 8 years ago, although the reason she decided to become the assistant of such a crazy physicist, or how she found him in the first place was unknown. She has been doing what he requested her to do nearly everytime ever since with the highest accuracies possible.
Yet, he still doesn't know what motivates her to do such a thing everytime.... Is it because Oxtra's really rich, and he pays a lot of money? Or is it because she can live in the same house as him- a mansion? Or, is it because of something else?
"...Alright, I guess I can explain it again... I have plenty of time right now. But first, I have worked on this project when I was 17, and now I'm 57. I'm glad I had extended my lifespan to 1000 years old, hehe. But anyway, that means I have been on a single project for like 40 years now... I mean, I did invent something else during that time, but yeah, you get it."
Karole replied, in the same bored voice. "Alright, alright... I suppose that you are really dedicated. She puts a cup - filled with a black and brown liquid that emits the bitter and sweet aroma of roasted coffee. "Here, it's your hot cup of coffee."
"Thanks. Did you know that caffeine can improve mood, brain functions, metabolism and slightly raise exercise perfomance? It is the reason why I looooove to have this little cup of coffee every day, besides the fact that it tastes great, even better when it's hot, and it's you who made it. Anyway, I'm going to just drink it..."
"Has anybody told you that you are so talkative?" Karole takes off her apron.
"Nope. I think it's fine, though." Oxtra, the mad scientist, drinks the coffee.
