I stand behind the door beaming with smiles. It was time, the time I have anticipated for months unending. I always imagined that on arrival home after my final examination, I would come home to my family standing in front of house together. But if wishes were horses, beggars would right too, wouldn't they? I turn to the audi behind me, Mr. Peters behind the wheel with a sad smile on his face waving goodbye at me.
"Thanks Mr. Peters. I'm just gonna go wait at the neighbours' till they return. Bye Maddy."
"Bye El", the father and daughter chorus together and drive off .
I drop my bags in front of the door and move towards Mrs .Elmer's door .She really needs help with those overgrown lawns looking out the street and dusty windows as clear as day .Her home could be easily be mistaken for a haunted house but what else could be said about a 73 year-old widow with a house full of cats .I'm welcomed by her felines as I make my way up her stairs. I knock once and look around the property, this places looks like shit .I swat the fly that lands on my nose and knock again .I hear something like glass crash and footsteps approach the door .I see her silver hair in her face and mole on her chin standing out more than it usually did. I brace myself the hugs that wouldn't stop flowing as soon as the door flung wide open.
"El, dearest", she said with a huge grin that showed her decaying teeth ,dang age.
"Mrs. Elmer"
"Bring it in here" As anticipated ,she opens her arms and I lean in to meet her half-way.I follow her to the kitchen were I find a pot of pudding cooking on her stove .I look around at the mess in the kitchen as I take my seat while she collects the pieces of flower vase she crashed on her way to the door.
"Your mom said you'd be coming home, Didn't know it'd be today. I would have cleaned up and baked you a cake."
"It's alright, completing high school isn't such a big deal. How have you been? Don't tell me you're already seeing someone? "I wink and chuckle at her, trying to ease the tension in the room.
" Oh child", she blushes as she shakes her head. "I'm too old now, no one would want me now .I have been alright though. It's just been so quite around here without your young energy filling this place." She gives a sad smile that makes my insides turn, was I really that important to anyone?"
"Well I'm here now ,I see the lawns are growing and your windows need some dusting too. I'm going to turn your house into a beautiful castle again in no time. "I laugh and take her small hands.
"Thanks El."
"No thank you Mrs. Elmer, we wouldn't know what to do without you in our lives ."I hear the door unlock and turn to find Mom walk with two neanderthals behind her, yes .The Neanderthals were my older brothers who always made me feel less than a little sister and more like a clown in a circus .I run towards Mom as she drops her bags and hug her as tight as I can. God did I miss this woman.
"Ow honey, not too tight please". Mom says and laughs so I loosen my grip on her. She kisses my forehead and takes a look into my eyes,
"Welcome home baby."
