Chapter Two: The Forest of Secrets
The forest seemed quieter than usual, as though it held its breath in anticipation. Robin sat by the flickering campfire, his sharp green eyes focused on the gentle flames that danced against the dark. Around him, the few adult demigods and children he had rescued huddled closer, their trust in him unwavering despite their shared fears. These were the ones who had found refuge in his camp, a sanctuary built with care, hidden deep in Sherwood's magical embrace.
The encounter with Artemis and her Huntresses still lingered in his mind. Though the goddess had granted him and his camp temporary peace, Robin could feel her watchful gaze. She was testing him, assessing whether he was truly an ally or just another mortal with ambitions too grand for his kind. The Huntresses had departed with their goddess, but the unspoken tension between them remained. Robin knew they would return.
As the embers crackled softly, his mind wandered to the other matters at hand. The gods had taken notice of the strange disappearances of monsters in Sherwood Forest. Robin’s arrows, enchanted by a long-forgotten blessing from the forest’s ancient magic, had proven devastatingly effective against the beasts. He had once thought it a mere gift of nature, but now he wondered if it was something more—a relic of a power older than Olympus itself.
"Robin," a voice broke through his thoughts. It was Marian, one of the oldest demigods in the camp, her dark hair tied back in a loose braid. "The scouts you sent out—they've returned."
Robin stood, brushing the dirt off his tunic, and strode toward the edge of the clearing. Two young demigods approached, their expressions a mixture of relief and unease. "What have you found?" Robin asked, his tone steady but urgent.
"There’s... something in the eastern part of the forest," one of the scouts began. "A clearing that wasn’t there before. It looks like... a gateway. But it’s not like anything we’ve seen."
"A gateway?" Robin frowned. "What kind of gateway?"
The second scout, a boy no older than fifteen, spoke up. "It's glowing, sir. Like starlight trapped in stone. We didn’t get too close—it felt... wrong. But it’s definitely not mortal-made."
Robin’s heart quickened. A gateway in the forest? Could it be tied to the gods? Or worse, a trap laid by one of their enemies? Either way, it wasn’t something he could ignore.
"Gather the others," he said. "We’ll investigate at dawn. No one goes alone. If this is what I think it is, we need to be prepared."
As the scouts hurried off to relay his orders, Robin turned back to Marian. "Keep watch over the camp while I’m gone. If the Huntresses return, offer them no hostility. But don’t let them near the children unless I’m here."
Marian nodded, her expression grim. "Be careful, Robin. If this gateway is tied to the gods, it could bring trouble we’re not ready for."
"Trouble has a way of finding us, Marian," he said with a faint smile. "But I’ll be careful."

At Dawn
The morning light filtered through the trees, casting a golden glow over the forest. Robin led a small group of trusted allies toward the mysterious clearing. The air grew heavier as they approached, thick with a strange energy that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.
And then he saw it.
In the heart of the clearing stood a towering archway made of stone, its surface carved with ancient symbols that seemed to shift and shimmer in the light. The center of the archway glowed with an ethereal light, pulsing faintly like a heartbeat. Robin stepped closer, his keen eyes scanning the symbols.
“It’s celestial bronze,” one of his companions whispered, awe in their voice. “The same metal used in the weapons of Olympus.”
Robin raised a hand to silence them, his focus narrowing on the archway. It wasn’t just celestial bronze—it was a mixture of divine craftsmanship and ancient forest magic. This gateway was a nexus of power, a bridge between worlds. But why was it here? And why now?
Before he could ponder further, the glow intensified, and a figure began to emerge from the light. Robin instinctively reached for his bow, nocking an arrow as his companions stepped back. The figure solidified, stepping through the gateway with a grace that was both otherworldly and familiar.
It was Artemis.
She stood before him, her silver hair catching the light, her eyes sharp as the edge of a blade. Behind her, the Huntresses filed out, their expressions unreadable but alert. Artemis raised a hand, signaling them to hold their positions, and fixed her gaze on Robin.
"You’ve stumbled upon something you cannot begin to comprehend," she said, her voice calm but laced with authority. "This gateway is not meant for mortals. Yet, it has chosen this place for a reason."
Robin lowered his bow but did not relinquish it entirely. "If this is your doing, then why has it appeared now? What purpose does it serve?"
Artemis regarded him carefully. "This is no creation of mine, mortal. It is older than even the gods. And it is waking because something far greater than you or I is stirring."
Her words sent a chill down Robin’s spine. He had always known there were forces in the world beyond his understanding, but to hear it confirmed by a goddess was another matter entirely.
"What do we do?" he asked, his voice steady despite the weight of her revelation.
Artemis stepped closer, her gaze softening ever so slightly. "For now, we watch. But be warned, Robin of Locksley. This forest, your camp, even your life—all of it may be tested in the days to come. The gods will not be the only ones drawn to this power."
Robin met her gaze, unflinching. "Then let them come. This forest has protected its own for centuries. I’ll make sure it continues to do so."
Artemis studied him for a moment longer, then nodded. "Very well. Let us see if you can live up to your reputation, mortal. The Huntresses and I will remain nearby. Do not give me a reason to doubt you."
As she turned and disappeared back into the trees with her Huntresses, Robin stared at the gateway, the faint glow reflecting in his determined eyes.
Whatever was coming, he would be ready.
