Birds chirped as the sun rose, the soft light crashing through Tomioka's curtains and disrupting his sleep. He squinted, groaning softly, before sitting up and stretching to shake off the stiffness of the night. It was just another ordinary morning.
After getting ready, he stepped outside, welcoming the cool breeze of early morning. As he glanced around, his eyes caught sight of a familiar figure standing beneath the cherry tree.
"Shinazugawa..." he murmured to himself.
Tomioka hesitated. Shinazugawa wasn't exactly the friendliest person, and every attempt at conversation between them always seemed to go sideways.
Still, something compelled him to approach. Slowly, almost casually, he found himself standing a few steps behind the other man.
"Ahh... I must be crazy," Tomioka muttered under his breath. Gathering every ounce of courage, he reached out and tapped Shinazugawa on the shoulder.
Shinazugawa didn't bother turning around. Instead, he sighed, clearly annoyed. "I don't need your company, Tomioka," he said bluntly.
The cold response left Tomioka momentarily speechless. He knew Shinazugawa well enough to expect this reaction, but it still stung. Even so, he refused to give up.
Taking a deep breath, Tomioka tried again. "I'm not here to bother you, I just..." His voice faltered as nervousness crept in. He hadn't thought this through.
Shinazugawa, impatient as always, turned to leave without a word.
"W-Wait!" Tomioka called after him, louder this time.
Shinazugawa stopped in his tracks and glanced back over his shoulder with an irritated glare. "What?"
Tomioka clenched his fists, trying to steady himself. "Look, Shinazugawa," he began, his voice firm even though his gaze was fixed firmly on the ground. "I know we don't get along. But... I want to try. To start over. To be friends, or something close to it."
He finally looked up, searching for some kind of reaction. "What do you say, Shinazugawa?"
Shinazugawa stared at him, his expression unreadable. Silence filled the air, stretching on longer than Tomioka would have liked.
Finally, Shinazugawa spoke. "No."
Tomioka blinked, taken aback. "No? What... what do you mean, no?"
"I mean what I said," Shinazugawa replied plainly. "Leave me alone."
And with that, he turned and walked away without looking back.
Still, as he watched the man disappear into the distance, Tomioka couldn't shake the feeling that he'd try again. He always did.
Left alone under the cherry tree, Tomioka let out a quiet sigh. "Maybe in another universe, he wouldn't be so grumpy."
