The days had been quieter since the battle with Muzan. The weight of the war, the loss of comrades, and the silent grief Shinazugawa had carried for so long had settled over him like a heavy fog. Despite his efforts to keep it all buried, there were moments when the emptiness threatened to overwhelm him.
The knock at the door was familiar, but unexpected. Shinazugawa grunted, not particularly in the mood to deal with anyone. Still, he got up, muscles tight with the tension he couldn't shake.
When he swung the door open, he expected to see Tanjiro or one of the other Hashira. But instead, Tomioka stood there, holding a small tray with a steaming cup of ocha. His usual stoic expression had softened, and there was something in his eyes that made Shinazugawa hesitate.
"What do you want?" Shinazugawa barked, trying to hide the unexpected knot in his stomach.
Tomioka, his gaze steady, held out the tray. "I brought you some tea. I thought... you might want to talk."
Shinazugawa blinked, caught off guard by the sudden gesture. "Talk? With you?"
Tomioka nodded, his tone unusually soft. "Yeah. I know things have been rough for you. For all of us, really. I just wanted to say... you don't have to go through it alone."
Shinazugawa's eyes narrowed, and his chest tightened at the offer. He was used to standing on his own, burying everything down. The idea of letting someone in, especially Tomioka, felt foreign and uncomfortable. But Tomioka wasn't backing down.
Shinazugawa glanced at the tray, then back at Tomioka, skepticism written all over his face. "Why now? After everything?"
Tomioka paused, then spoke carefully, his voice quieter than usual. "Because... I can see the weight you're carrying. And I've been there too. I know it's not easy, but I just... want to help. Even if it's just listening. You don't have to carry it by yourself."
Shinazugawa looked at him for a long moment, his mind racing. The thought of opening up, of letting someone else in, felt like a weakness—something he couldn't afford. He had built walls so high that even he couldn't climb them anymore.
But for the first time in a long while, he felt the walls crack just a little.
"Fine," he muttered, surprising himself. "I'll... talk. But only because you're annoying me."
Tomioka's eyes widened, his jaw tightening in surprise. He hadn't expected Shinazugawa to agree, not so easily. For a moment, he just stood there, processing what had just happened. Shinazugawa was actually willing to let him in, even if just a little.
"Wait... seriously?" Tomioka's voice betrayed his shock, the rare hint of disbelief slipping out.
Shinazugawa glared at him, annoyed at the question. "I'm not joking, Tomioka. Just... sit down."
Tomioka hesitated for a second before setting the tray down on a nearby table and sitting across from Shinazugawa. The silence between them felt heavier now, but it was different from before. It wasn't awkward—it was uncertain, like two people standing on the edge of something new.
Shinazugawa shifted uncomfortably, not used to being this vulnerable. But Tomioka's steady presence made something inside him loosen. "I... I've lost too much," he muttered, eyes darkening. "I don't know how to—how to keep going after that. How to... let it go."
Tomioka's gaze softened. "You don't have to forget them. The people you lost... they'll always be a part of you. But that doesn't mean you have to carry that burden alone."
Shinazugawa clenched his fists at his sides. "I've always done everything on my own. I don't need anyone's pity."
Tomioka's expression remained calm, his voice still quiet. "I'm not offering pity. I'm offering... support. A friend. If you ever need to talk, or even just... sit in silence. You don't have to do this alone."
Shinazugawa's heart skipped a beat at the word friend. It felt strange—alien, even—but something in Tomioka's words made his chest ache in a way he hadn't expected.
He swallowed, trying to push back the feelings that threatened to surface. For the first time in a long while, Shinazugawa felt the weight of his walls—his own stubborn pride—shifting, ever so slightly.
"Maybe... I don't know," he muttered, his gaze falling to the floor. "But... maybe we could try."
Tomioka blinked, completely taken aback. "What?"
Shinazugawa sighed, scratching the back of his neck, suddenly feeling a little too exposed. "I said maybe. Don't make a big deal out of it."
Tomioka's surprise was palpable. He sat there, wide-eyed, almost unable to believe what he'd just heard. For a moment, it seemed like the entire room was holding its breath, waiting for one of them to say something more. But all Tomioka could do was nod slowly, a tiny, relieved smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
"If that's what you want," Tomioka said quietly, "I'm here. Whenever you're ready."
Shinazugawa, for the first time in years, allowed himself to breathe a little easier. It wasn't much, but it was a start. The air between them wasn't so suffocating anymore. There was space now, space for something new, something tentative, but real.
A true moment of connection.
Shinazugawa looked up, meeting Tomioka's gaze. There was a flicker of understanding there—something unspoken, but undeniable. They had both suffered in their own ways, carried burdens that no one else could understand. But now, there was a bridge between them, fragile yet solid in its own right.
For the first time, Shinazugawa didn't feel so alone.
"I'm not good at this," he muttered, barely above a whisper. "But... I guess we'll see what happens."
Tomioka smiled, a quiet, genuine smile. "We'll take it one step at a time."
As the silence settled around them, the weight of the past still hung heavy in the air, but there was something different now. A new chapter was beginning, and though neither of them could see where it would lead, there was a sense of hope that hadn't been there before.
For now, that was enough.
