It was before I was even born that my mother’s life was torn apart. After discovering at the hospital that she was carrying twins, the news brought both joy and fear. Now the pressure weighed even more heavily on her.

When my mother returned home and shared the news with the family she worked for, the reaction was far from kind. The lady of the house, who had always been somewhat kind, was visibly upset. Her tone shifted sharply, and her once polite demeanour turned hostile. She began treating my mother poorly, questioning everything about her situation. Finally, she asked the dreaded question, “Who is the father?”

Hesitant but with no way to avoid the truth, my mother replied softly, “It’s the security guard. His name is...”

Before she could finish, the woman’s anger boiled over. She immediately called for the security guard. Moments later, he appeared, confused and unprepared for what was about to unfold.

The woman wasted no time confronting him. Her voice was sharp and filled with fury. “Is this true? Are you the father of her children?” she demanded.

Caught off guard, the security guard stammered, unable to deny the truth. My mother stood silently, trembling as the weight of the situation pressed down on her. The man she had once trusted was now forced to face his responsibility, though his response would soon reveal his true character.

The lady of the house, still furious, turned back to my mother and issued an ultimatum: “You can stay here, but only under one condition. Once the twins are born, one of them will be given up for adoption. If you refuse, you will need to leave with your children.”

Though her heart broke at the thought of losing one of her children, my mother knew she couldn’t afford to leave. She had no savings, no support, and no other home to turn to. For the sake of her children, she decided to stay.

Weeks passed, and my mother endured the humiliation of the situation in silence. She worked harder than ever, trying to avoid the scornful glares and harsh comments from the family. Then, the day finally arrived. My mother gave birth to twins—a boy and a girl. Despite all the hardship, both of us were delivered safely.

But just as my mother was trying to process the joy and heartbreak of the situation, my father, the security guard, made a shocking decision. Instead of stepping up to support my mother and the newborns, he immediately quit his job. He walked away from everything, leaving my mother to face the challenges alone. His abandonment cut deeply, but it also lit a fire in my mother’s spirit.

To my mother’s surprise, the lady of the house’s anger seemed to cool after the birth. However, her decision didn’t change. She insisted that one of us—the twins—would be adopted. She claimed this was the only way for my mother to continue living in the home and earning her keep. My mother was devastated. How could she choose between her children?

It was the most heart-wrenching decision of her life. She loved us both deeply and couldn’t imagine letting either of us go. But with no other options and the fear of losing everything, she was forced to make a choice.

Her decision would shape our lives in ways none of us could have imagined, leaving behind a story of heartbreak, resilience, and survival.
