For the first three months, it was just my twin brother, my mother, and me. We were together, navigating a difficult life but finding comfort in each other. My mother worked tirelessly as a housemaid for a wealthy family, trying to provide for us. But everything changed when the family presented her with a devastating demand: she had to give one of us up for adoption. The situation was made even more unbearable because my father had already quit his job and abandoned us. He showed no interest in supporting or helping us, leaving my mother completely alone in an unfamiliar city. She couldn’t turn to her own family—they were far away, struggling with poverty, and couldn’t afford to accept her with two children. Trapped and with no other options, my mother had no choice but to stay in that home. The condition was clear: she could only keep one child, and the other would have to be given up for adoption. It was the toughest decision she ever had to make.
One morning, there was a knock at the main door. When it was opened, a middle-aged husband and wife stood there. They politely requested to speak with the owners of the house. After they were invited inside and seated, the woman who owned the house called for my mother. She told her, in an emotionless voice, “They’ve come for the boy, as per your decision.” My mother froze, the weight of her earlier choice crashing down on her at that moment.
Despite her pain, there was no going back. The couple thanked the owners and soon left with my twin brother. No legal papers were signed, and no proper process followed—it all happened so quickly, leaving my mother in shock and despair. My brother, just three months old, was gone.
We were just three-month-old babies when we were separated. Writing about it now fills me with the same pain my mother must have felt that day. Life went on, but it was filled with unpredictable challenges and heartbreaking moments. Each passing day seemed to bring new trials, as if life had more dramatic and painful situations waiting just ahead.
The loss of my twin brother was a wound that never fully healed. It left a void in our family, a shadow that followed us everywhere. Little did we know that the struggles we had faced so far were only the beginning of what was yet to come.
