As the days passed, Ethan found himself spending more time with Aaron. It was subtle at first—shared meals, study sessions, and late-night talks. But something between them had shifted. There was a quiet understanding in the air, something unspoken that lingered in the spaces between their words.
It was another Friday night when Aaron invited Ethan to join him for a party. Ethan had never been one for the loud, crowded events, but the idea of staying in his dorm room, alone with his thoughts, felt suffocating. He hesitated for only a moment before agreeing.
"I’m not saying I’ll stay long," Ethan warned, already feeling the anxiety of stepping into unfamiliar social territory.
Aaron grinned, slinging an arm around Ethan’s shoulders as they walked to the party. "You’ll have fun, I promise. Just give it a chance."
The party was packed, the music blaring, and the chatter of dozens of voices filled the air. Ethan’s unease was palpable, but Aaron, ever the social butterfly, immediately blended in, talking to friends and making Ethan feel like less of an outsider. For the first time since arriving at college, Ethan felt like maybe he didn’t have to hide.
After a while, Aaron led Ethan outside to the backyard, where it was quieter, and the cool night air felt like a relief from the heat of the crowd. They stood side by side, watching the stars, the sound of laughter and music faint in the background.
Aaron turned to him, his expression soft. "I’m glad you came," he said, his voice quieter than usual.
Ethan looked at him, his chest unexpectedly tight. There was something in Aaron’s eyes that made him feel both vulnerable and safe. For the first time in a long while, Ethan wasn’t worried about saying the wrong thing, about messing everything up.
"I’m glad you asked," Ethan admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
Aaron smiled, his gaze dropping to Ethan’s lips for a fraction of a second before meeting his eyes again. There was a moment of stillness—of anticipation, as if the world had paused for just a heartbeat.
Without thinking, Ethan reached up, his fingers brushing lightly against Aaron’s arm. The touch was tentative, unsure, but Aaron’s response was immediate. His hand gently cupped Ethan’s face, tilting it upward, and before Ethan could fully process what was happening, Aaron’s lips were on his.
The kiss was soft, gentle—like the first raindrops after a long drought, unexpected but entirely necessary. Ethan froze for a split second, caught off guard by the sudden rush of emotions that surged through him. But then, as Aaron’s lips moved against his, something shifted. Ethan kissed him back, slowly at first, as if testing the waters, but soon he was leaning into it, his hands resting on Aaron’s chest.
Aaron deepened the kiss, his hand slipping to the back of Ethan’s neck, pulling him closer. The warmth of Aaron’s body, the scent of his cologne, everything about him felt intoxicating, like nothing Ethan had ever experienced. His pulse raced, his heart thudding in his chest, but it felt right—this was different, and he didn’t want it to end.
Finally, they pulled apart, breathless. Ethan’s heart was still pounding, his mind racing to catch up with what had just happened. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt so... alive.
"I didn’t expect that," Ethan breathed, his voice thick with uncertainty.
Aaron smiled, his thumb brushing across Ethan’s cheek. "Neither did I," he admitted. "But it felt... right, didn’t it?"
Ethan nodded, not trusting himself to speak, his thoughts tangled in the aftermath of the kiss. There was so much he didn’t understand—so many emotions he hadn’t let himself explore. But in that moment, with Aaron standing so close, with the cool night air swirling around them, he knew one thing for sure: something had changed between them.
Aaron leaned in again, this time pressing a soft kiss to Ethan’s forehead, as if reassuring him that everything was okay. "You’re not alone in this, Ethan," Aaron murmured. "We’ll figure it out, together."
Ethan closed his eyes, the words sinking in like a promise, and he felt a warmth spread through him. Maybe he wasn’t so alone after all.
To be continued
