Kyle took in a deep breath as he navigated the crowded halls of his new high school in San Francisco. His father's latest military transfer had brought their family here in the middle of his junior year, forcing him to start over yet again. But Kyle was used to adjusting—he'd always had an easygoing charm and a golden-boy vibe that made people feel at ease, even drawn to him without him trying. Still, this was different. Eyes trailed him as he walked by, students murmuring as they took in his warm hazel eyes, effortlessly styled hair, and toned body.
The tension buzzed faintly in the air as he slid into his first class, spotting an empty seat next to a solidly built guy with a sharp jawline and a rugged intensity about him. Jerry was his name, as the teacher had introduced earlier—a tall guy with a muscular frame, tree-trunk legs, and a presence that commanded attention. As Kyle settled into his seat, he couldn't help glancing over at Jerry, who seemed equally aware of Kyle's presence, even if he was trying not to show it. There was something magnetic about him, his eyes carrying a slight edge that kept Kyle intrigued.
"Hey, Jerry, right?" Kyle said with a casual smile, turning to face him. "I'm Kyle. Just moved here. It's...different."
Jerry chuckled, his eyes flicking over to Kyle and then away, as if trying to play it cool. "Yeah, welcome to San Francisco. You'll get used to it. Or not."
Kyle laughed, amused by Jerry's dry humor. The ice broke with each whispered joke they shared, and as the bell rang, Jerry turned to him, a smile finally breaking through his usual serious demeanor.
"Want a tour?" he offered, looking almost embarrassed at how forward he sounded.
"Definitely," Kyle said, standing up and stretching, feeling Jerry's gaze drift down for a split second before he quickly looked away.
The school tour was full of easy conversation and laughter, with Kyle slipping in subtle, friendly touches—a tap on Jerry's shoulder, a quick brush of his hand on his arm—which Jerry seemed to feel, his cheeks tinged with the slightest flush. By the time they hit the cafeteria for lunch, they'd already fallen into a comfortable rhythm.
Sitting across from each other, Kyle noticed that people were still glancing their way. He leaned in, lowering his voice with a smirk. "Is it just me, or is everyone staring?"
Jerry met his gaze, biting his lip. "Well...being new has its perks. And, you know, it doesn't hurt that you look like...that."
Kyle raised an eyebrow, laughing off the compliment. "Appreciate it, man," he said, nudging Jerry's arm again. They held each other's eyes for a second longer than intended before they both looked away, laughing it off.
When the last bell rang, Jerry offered to walk Kyle partway home. As they stepped outside, Kyle felt the warm sun on his face, feeling relaxed in a way he hadn't in a while. They talked easily, swapping stories about favorite movies, sports, and hobbies. Every now and then, Kyle would laugh and playfully bump Jerry's shoulder, feeling a warm flicker of excitement he couldn't quite explain.
As they reached Kyle's block, he turned to Jerry with an appreciative smile. "Thanks for everything, man. Today would've been a mess without you."
"Anytime, Kyle," Jerry said, his voice softer than usual. He lingered, his eyes holding onto Kyle's, the tension between them barely concealed. Kyle's easygoing touch on Jerry's arm felt more intentional this time, leaving an electric thrill that hummed between them.
They held each other's gaze a moment longer before Jerry gave a small, hesitant smile and stepped back. "See you tomorrow?"
"Definitely."
With a nod, Jerry turned and walked off, leaving Kyle standing there, the warmth of their goodbye touch lingering like a spark, one he couldn't quite shake off.
