Losers: Vol 1
Chapter 1: Losers
Illinois, a sweet rainy street in Illinois. This is where a dark, and socially awkward girl known as Rhonda Delmarva begins her school day, walking along the path in the rain. Her slightly heeled black shoes clicked on the sidewalk as she approached Mulner High. Another day going by, just like all the others had before, what a drag. She tuned out the pitter pattering of raindrops around her as she turned off the sidewalk to her right and onto the school grounds. Her brown curly hair was damp with rain, same as her black coat. Her pinstripe capri pants were also damp with beads of rainwater, but it was no bother, life would go on. She looked up at the faded pep rally banner above the entrance as she walked, her brown eyes glimmering in the early morning light. Speaking of early, she was extremely early.
Rhonda walked through the school's double doors and into the empty hallway. The walls were lined with navy blue lockers, each one metal, some with dents. That was probably courtesy of the braindead football team. She passed the other small few who dared to be early to school on Monday, they stood in the halls by their lockers. They were nerds and geeks. But then what did that make her? It made her a loser, just like the rest, just like every kid in this god forsaken high school. Her and her limited social circle, they were all losers. But who could honestly give a fuck, everyone has to live right, even geeks and losers. Rhonda turned the corner to the right at the end of the hall, the bright yet dim lights buzzed above her head. They only added the feeling of dread to each morning. She slowed her pace as she approached her locker on the left, twisting the darn thing to its numbers. Her locker code was -2291-. One of her black nails chipped as she swung her locker's door open, unbuttoning then shoving her jacket inside, taking out a couple of books. She would go and sit in the library until classes began, maybe she would see if Robbie had woken up early and come to meet her like he promised. So many things to do.
A gangly man whose green trousers were too short for his legs, rolled a Projector down the hall on a cart. His brightly coloured socks screamed with color as he looked back at the girl he had just passed. He recognised her from his history class. "Hey Rhonda", he called. Rhonda peeped out from behind her locker door to see the tall ginger man, his glasses and beard extremely recogniseable. "You need something Mr Barnsley", she asked, half sarcastically. He chuckled, he always had a knack for picking up on her sarcasm. "You could say that, I'm starting an AV Club here at Mulner and I was wondering if you'd like to join?", he asked, "I know you like the art of film, could be fun", he proposed, stopping his cart and standing across from her in the hall. An AV Club, that did sound fun. "Supposing I want to, What would I be doing if I decided to join?", she asked. Mr Barnsley grinned, his smile extending from cheek to cheek. This may just be the first time in his teaching career that he had ever managed to peak her interest.
Mr Barnsley chuckled, scratching the back of his neck. "Well we'd be making some promotional videos for all the clubs here, and maybe some short films", he leant against the cart as he went through his mental checklist. "Oh and some members could help out with the projectors at pep rallies", he nodded. "Some teachers are intimidated by them, too technological I guess", he shrugged enthusiastically. Rhonda gave a small smile, "I'll totally think about it Mr Barnsley", she nodded, causing his smile to get even bigger. It was almost endearing to see the man's excitement at the prospect of an AV Club. He began to walk away as Robbie walked up, giving Rhonda a small wave as he did. "Oh hey Robbie, you too yeah, AV Club, come to my classroom at lunch alright", Mr Barnsley gave a thumbs up as he rolled the projector's cart down the hall, satisfied with his chance encounter as he turned the hall.
Robbie smiled, amused and confused at Mr Barnsley's level of awakeness for a monday morning, and what he was talking about. Robbie was a mute, hadn't spoken a word in nine years when he was in company. So he looked at Rhonda, sometimes it was like he didn't need to speak, the two of them were totally synced up, they just knew the other's thoughts. "He's starting up an AV club, Robbie", she told her tall friend, "And he wants us to join". He gave her another look, and without even thinking she replied correctly. "It could be fun, making promo videos for the school", she shrugged as she slammed her locker shut, slowly starting to walk down the hall towards the library, Robbie following along with her back from the way he had come. "I mean we're juniors and no one in this hell hole even knows who we are, at least we'd have something to do at lunch", she shrugged.
Robbie could tell she wanted to do it, she was like this, always afraid to admit she wanted something from life. He put a hand on her shoulder and gave a nod. "So you think we should give it a try?", she asked hesitantly. He gave a nod, confident that they should. After all, what could be worse than sitting in the corner of the cafeteria by the trash cans getting hit by flying trash thrown by the jocks. "I guess the AV Club has at least two of us then", Rhonda smiled hesitantly as the two walked down the hall, headed for the library. Robbie smiled, walking by her side. He was a tall yet thick boy. Not fat by any means, but he was in no way a skeleton. The two approached the library and turned into it, her heels clicking on the floor once more as his converse pattered almost silently.
And so we leave these two to their studies for the morning, awaiting the beginning of classes as we shift our focus onto another, a boy by the name of Charles ,Chuck, Ray.
