The school library. The air smells of old books and freshly sharpened pencils. Ava sits at a table near the back, flipping through the pages of a book while her sketchbook rests open beside her. She nervously taps her pen against the table, trying to avoid thinking about the upcoming project with Ethan Blake. The bell rings, signaling the end of the school day.
---
Ava packed her things slowly, trying to delay the inevitable. The English project, her first real collaboration with Ethan, loomed over her like a dark cloud. She hadn't even started to plan how they would work together, and the thought of it made her stomach twist.
Ava thinking: "What if it's a disaster? What if we can't even agree on something to do?"
Her mind raced with a thousand what-ifs as she made her way to the front of the library to check out her books. Her eyes darted nervously to the entrance. Ethan hadn't shown up yet, and part of her was relieved. Maybe he'd forget about the project. Maybe he wouldn't show up at all.
But then the door swung open with a loud creak.
Ethan speaks from the doorway: "Hey, princess. You ready to get this over with?"
Ava froze. Ethan stood at the threshold, a cocky grin on his face, his leather jacket creaking as he moved.
Ava muttering: "I wasn't ready five minutes ago, and I'm definitely not ready now."
Ethan chuckling: "Good to know."
He made his way toward her with an almost lazy confidence, pulling out the chair across from her and sitting down without waiting for an invitation. Ava had no choice but to return to her seat and look up at him, trying to hide her irritation.
They both spread out their materials across the table—a few books, a notebook, and Ava's sketchbook—silence hanging in the air. Ethan leans back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest.
Ava trying to break the tension: "So, um... do you have any ideas for this project?"
Ethan shrugging: "Not really. I mean, I don't care how it turns out. We can just make it quick and get it done."
Ava winced. She could feel the frustration rising inside her, the desire to get this over with warring with her need to create something meaningful. She glanced at Ethan, wondering if he was just giving up on the project already—or if he truly didn't care.
Ava biting her lip: "It's not about getting it done fast. We have to work together, remember?"
Ethan smirking: "Right, right. Working together. You're the artist, I'm the... whatever. You tell me what we're doing."
Ava felt her frustration spike. She opened her sketchbook, flipping to a page filled with ideas for her art portfolio, hoping she could at least salvage some part of this collaboration. She showed Ethan the page.
Ava speaking: "Well, I was thinking we could do something based on this. Maybe a visual project, something that tells a story through drawings."
Ethan glanced at the page but didn't seem overly impressed. He picked up a pencil and tapped it on the table, eyes roaming the room.
Ethan lazily: "I don't know. What if we do something with music? We could... I don't know... make a short film? Or write a song or something."
Ava's brow furrowed, her mind racing. She'd never considered combining her art with music before, but something about the idea clicked. She paused for a moment, thinking.
Ava thoughtfully: "Actually, that could work. A short film... with illustrations. We could create a story and you could help with the music, maybe even narration."
Ethan looked up, surprised.
Ethan raising an eyebrow: "You think I'd do narration?"
Ava smiling faintly: "You'd be great at it. You've got that voice, you know?"
Ethan let out a low laugh, clearly amused.
Ethan speaking: "I didn't think you noticed."
Ava blushed slightly but didn't back down. There was something in his eyes now—something like respect, maybe. Or maybe it was just amusement.
Ava more confident: "I pay attention."
The conversation started to flow a bit more easily after that. They began to brainstorm ideas for the project—what the story would be, how to incorporate illustrations and narration. Ava found herself surprised by how well they bounced ideas off each other. Ethan had a sharp, witty edge that made her think in new ways.
Later that evening, the library had started to empty. Ava and Ethan were still there, working together on the project. The tension from earlier had melted into a quiet focus.
Ava sketched a rough outline of the story they'd agreed on: a young girl learning to navigate her fears and dreams. Ethan jotted down notes for the narration, even humming a few lines to himself under his breath.
Ava looking up from her sketchbook: "You know, I didn't expect this to go so well."
Ethan glancing up with a smirk: "Yeah, well, I'm full of surprises."
Ava couldn't help but smile back. There was something different about him in this moment—more than the arrogant, troublemaker persona he showed the world. Maybe they weren't so different after all.
Ava walks out of the library with Ethan, both of them holding their project materials. The cold evening air bites at their cheeks, but there's a quiet understanding between them. Ava's mind races, not with doubts, but with curiosity about what comes next.
Ava thinking: "Maybe this project won't be a disaster after all. Maybe we'll make something great."
As they parted ways at the school gates, Ethan looked over his shoulder at her.
Ethan speaking: "See you tomorrow, princess."
Ava rolled her eyes but smiled, feeling something inside her stir.
Ava says quietly to herself: "See you tomorrow, Blake."
