As they descended the stairs, Avriel felt a wave of dizziness overcome her.
A sudden flash of vision burst before her eyes, a moment vivid and raw. A voice, soft yet piercing, echoed in her mind:
"Love, let's do this together. Even if I die today, I'll come back for you."The whispers grew louder, circling her mind like a relentless storm until darkness claimed her, and she fainted.
Iver's POV
As we made our way down the stairs, I felt something strange, a flicker of life in my chest that I hadn't felt in years.
I used to be human, after all. I had a girlfriend once, sure, it was just for a week, but hey, it still counts. I had a family, friends, a future. All of it crumbled the moment I let greed for fame and immortality consume me. They say excess destroys, and they're right. I'm living or rather, existing proof.
And then there's Avriel. Just a 5-foot-tall human. Yet somehow, this girl is teaching a dead man how to live again.
It's ironic. I wanted to kill her when we first met, but now, I feel like I'm the one dying, this time, by her charm and her ridiculous, fearless courage.
I was about to ask her if she had any sort of plan when her body crumpled, fainting right into my arms.
The moment she touched me, something broke inside. A surge of panic swelled within me, freezing me in place. I'd never been this useless.
"Avriel? Avvie? Hey, wake up!" I called, shaking her lightly. But she didn't move.
I scooped her up in my arms, carrying her bridal style to the nearest bed and tucking her in gently. My hands lingered for a moment, and I hated the frustration building inside me.
I'm a ghost. I can't even call a doctor. All I could do was hope she was just exhausted. Hope that she'd wake up soon.
I headed to the kitchen, grabbing the water bottle she'd packed earlier.
Avriel's POV
While Avriel was sleeping and wandering in her dreamland, she found herself surrounded by fog, the air thick with an eerie chill. She was in a jungle , unfamiliar, yet somehow hauntingly familiar.
She wandered aimlessly, her heart pounding as shadows shifted around her. And then, she saw it. A grand hall bathed in golden light, its walls whispering of centuries past.
She stood at its center, but she wasn't alone. A man was there with her, his presence magnetic and profound. Avriel's breath caught as she turned to look closer.
She saw herself. Not quite her, but a version of her , a past self dressed in flowing robes, her face illuminated with a strange warmth and recognition.
"Iver..." she whispered.
Memories surged like a storm within her, fragments falling into place like shards of glass. This place, this man, it was their story. Their tragedy.
She was sleeping but her mouth started blabbering on its own. "I won't leave you. I'm here. I won't leave you. I'm here. I won't le-"
Her voice echoed as her vision blurred, snapping her back into reality and she suddenly jolted up.
Iver's POV
I had just returned from the kitchen with the water bottle when Avriel jolted upright, gasping for breath.
She was drenched in sweat, her face pale and panicked. Before I could react, she bolted out of bed and stumbled straight into me.
Her arms wrapped around me tightly, her small frame trembling.
I froze. For the second time in one day, this human caught me off guard.
What was she doing to me? The intimacy of this moment clawed at the walls I'd built around myself. I felt... vulnerable. That's not a feeling a ghost is supposed to have.
"Avriel," I said, trying to regain control, "calm down and get off me. I'm a ghost, not your mother."
She didn't let go. "I saw you," she stammered between panicked breaths. "I... I saw something."
Her words were choked, tangled in fear, and I couldn't help but wonder what she had seen.
And worse-why did I care so much?
