Julia smoothed her dress awkwardly as she went down the stairs, feeling every familiar patch and stitch. In this crazy circus, Kamille's stitch-work in her clothes was oddly comforting.
"Hey, another country heard from!" Dotty joked as she saw Julia descending the stairs.
"It's good to see you." Kamille said earnestly.
Julia gave a meek little wave. Dotty and Bob stood up from their seats at the fire and began to meet her and Tonny halfway. The scent of the smoke was almost refreshing. She'd never smelt anything like this back home, as fire safety laws never permitted much more than the stove.
"Dotty, could you get us some drinks from Bob?" Tonny requested.
"Uh- I don't really-"
"Nonsense, Bob's drinks are the best." Dotty smirked.
"If you don't want one, you don't have to, I was just trying to be polite." Anthonn said, that soft smile tugging at his lips as his eyes rounded.
"No, it's fine. I came down here, so I may as well try it."
The aerialist grinned, "You heard 'em, Bob. Let's make the best round yet."
Bob nodded, "You'll love it."
Julia watched as they added to their concoction. Water, some weird herb, lemon, something she didn't recognize, and was that... orange juice? She could already feel herself begin to gag. This was the drink that the circus went crazy for?
Bob passed the drinks over to her and Tonny. Dotty and Bob linked arms and walked back to their seats at the campfire, not wanting to intrude on them anymore. The ringmaster extended his arm out to her.
"Bottoms up."
The two hit their cups together and downed a gulp of the drinks. The taste was unpleasant when it first hit her tongue, but when she swallowed, she felt herself becoming accustomed to it. It was dizzying really. An electrifying chill on her tastebuds.
"So what'd you think?"
"Weird. But, like, good weird."
"Does that make me good weird or bad weird?"
"Definitely bad weird. You're just terrible." She jabbed sarcastically, making wide gestures.
"Ouch... I'm hurt." He whimpered, feigning offense.
The duo erupted into laughter. Julia could feel her entire chest shake with each inhale and tears glistened in her eyes. How long had it been since she'd acted like a kid again?
"Let's go sit by the fire. I mean- unless you want to sit in the fire like some people." He suggested, pointing at the guitarist who was messing around with friends as they danced in the flames.
"I think I'll pass."
"I thought so," He chuckled.
They walked over, practically attached at the hip, and sat down in a gap between Kamille, Plip, and Plop.
"Look at these designs Plip and Plop made up!" Kamille said, excitedly shoving a notebook into Julia's hands.
"Oh, wow... it's gorgeous," She murmured in awe, "Tonny look at this."
She passed the design to him, and his eyes scanned over each intricate detail. It was a lilac pink dress with a white lacy shawl and cotton candy pink flowers dotting the waistline.
"It's cute, but it doesn't seem like Rainah's style."
"Well, it's not for her."
Julia and Tonny exchanged a confused glance. Plip and Plop nodded at her statement.
"So, who's it for?" She pressed.
Kamille shrugged, "I dunno. Still debating."
"Probably one for Dotty. It's pink like her." Tonny guessed.
The guessing game stopped when a few of the performers broke out into a dance, loudly laughing and singing songs. The cacophony certainly wasn't the most pleasant, but it was a welcome change from the usual silence of the night.
"Dance with me!" Julia begged, grabbing Tonny's arm and dragging him towards the group.
"What?" He looked terrified, and his face was a bit flushed.
"You heard me- dance!"
The alcohol must've gotten to her because her thoughts were a bit hazy, her steps were messy, and her confidence had skyrocketed. Her skin was warm against Tonny as she pulled him closer and began to sway.
"What's up with her?!" He gasped, trying to keep up with her crazy moves as they stepped over each other's feet.
"It's her first time drinking!" Kamille yelled back in reply.
"What?!? I should've been more careful."
"It's okay, Tonny's helping me!" Julia said, raising his arm up in the air.
"Yeah, I'm helping you to bed." He sighed.
"Awh! Let's me have some fun!" She complained.
Tonny had a bit of a hard time being firm with her, but he gritted his teeth and said, "Nope, you can have as much fun as you want in your room."
She pouted, and he grimaced. Kamille laughed and Plip and Plop sort of just stared. He could never tell what they were thinking anyway.
"Can I have a dance with the pretty lady before she goes?" A familiar voice asked from behind.
Sahed. Tonny clocked the voice at once.
"No. We were just leaving."
"I wasn't asking-" Sahed paused, biting his lip, "...she's drunk... isn't she?"
Tonny nodded grimly, "Apparently it's her first drink."
The ah'kon burst into laughter, almost bringing himself to tears.
"To think someone like you can't handle your alcohol."
Anthonn shook his head, speaking slowly, "We'll be going now."
To his surprise, Sahed didn't put up much resistance. Was it because of what Julia had said about not wanting to talk to him again? At this point, he could honestly care less and was more focused on how glad he was that Sahed had his ego pegged down a few notches.
"Alright, sleepy head, let's go."
Tonny wrapped his arm around Julia, her arm around his shoulder as he guided her. He could practically hear Dotty's shrill scream of approval that he was "making a move"— which he wasn't! He was her boss for fuck's sake, and, to make things worse, she was drunk out of her mind.
As the pair ascended the staircase, Julia broke the silence, "Hold on. Just look as the sky... it's so... sparkly."
She stood at the railing, gazing up at the stars and letting out little gasps of awe at the fireworks.
"Yeah. Nighttime's my favorite, too. It's so serene." He commented, but he wasn't even sure there were any thoughts running through Julia's mind as she stared into the distance.
"The moon's full tonight. If magic's real and we can come back to life, you think there's werewolves?"
"No, I doubt it. Some myths are better left myths."
"Do you think this circus should've remained a myth?" She queried, a hint of seriousness in her tone.
"Well, sometimes I miss my family, but the circus is my family now," He replied somberly.
"I'm glad to have you."
Julia's gaze was soft as she turned herself to face Tonny.
"Me too."
