          — WHEN REMUS WOKE UP, his bed was cold. He hummed, his hand instinctively reaching out before he even opened his eyes. He frowned, realizing Sirius wasn't in bed next to him, he blinked open his eyes, glancing around the dorm which was lit with a warm glow from the lantern beside his bed. He thought Sirius had simply gone back to his own bed but a quick glance at the bed told him that wasn't the case. Looking beyond the beds he caught sight of a figure bundled up on the small bend in front of the window.

Climbing out of bed, Remus moved towards him slowly. "Sirius," he called quietly, trying not to wake their other dorm mates, "pads, why are you up?" He whispered gently, coming to stand beside Sirius, his hand drifting instinctively to the boy's arm.

His lips were pulled in a tight frown, his brows furrowed — had Sirius had a nightmare and not woken him? Sirius always woke him nowadays if he had a nightmare, if he hadn't it must've been bad. Worse than they had in a while.

However, when Sirius glanced at him it was with a small smile that let Remus breathe a sigh of relief.

"It's snowing." Sirius whispered, his eyes lit with an almost childlike wonder. Remus glanced out the window Sirius was sitting beside and found the ground was covered in a growing layer of snow, snowflakes still falling as the window began to get icy with the cold. A smile grew on Remus's face too then and for a second, Remus forgot all their troubles — all the things they had been through at such a young age. They were just two kids.

Two kids in love.

Remus sat down across from Sirius, his gaze falling on the snow outside, "it's snowing." He said lightly. Remus had always hated the winter before, he had no form of protection against the cold air back at the orphanage it was only when he reached Hogwarts that he realized the cold didn't have to be painful, and only with Sirius did he realize it could be beautiful.

Sirius loved the snow. And Remus loved Sirius, so of course he loved the snow too — if only for the smile it brought to Sirius's face, though truthfully over the years at Hogwarts, he began to see the beauty in the snow.

"Do you want to go outside?" Remus asked knowingly when he glanced back and found Sirius staring longingly at the snow falling.

Sirius paused, hesitation clear in his eyes, "I— could we?" He asked quietly as if he saying the words felt treacherous. Another result from the Black home, Remus was sure.

He didn't want to dwell on it, he hated thinking of just how much that place scarred his best friend, and instead he grinned at him, "Of course we can." He told him gently, and then glanced around the dorm, "Should we wake James and Peter too?" He asked hesitantly.

Sirius was already shaking his head when Remus's gaze went back to him, and if the room had better light he would see the blush on the boy's pale skin, "No, they need their rest and..." he paused, so unlike the confident boy Remus knew that it made Remus frown, "I'd like it to just be us, is that... is that terrible?"

Oh.

Oh.

Remus's heart clenched and he shook his head, his smile returning, "it's not, Pads." He assured gently, fighting the urge to grab Sirius's hand because the two had figured out a while ago that they had feelings for each other but it was complicated. Always complicated. They feared messing up what the four of them had as best friends, so scared to cross the line even as they slept in the same bed to protect each other against the nightmares that plagued both of them.
