song lyric [for the chapter]: at last - by etta james

Here we go... Melody thought to herself, pacing in front of the vanity mirror before pausing, her attention turning to her reflection.

She looked in the mirror at herself, her own amber eyes staring back at her as she sighed, biting her lip nervously. She couldn't imagine herself here, in the Pride Ring, about to preform to Sinners and Hellborn alike, but despite her hesitation, a part of her was giddy at the prospect...

-- flashback; one month ago --

The song ended and the bar let out some half-hearted, drunken cheers as Melody stood on the janky, wooden stage. The dingy bar lights illuminated the bar patrons as they drank and chatted. Melody did a little bow, before sighing and walking off stage.

She went over to the bar counter before ordering a drink, her eyes downturned as she fidgeted mindlessly with her hands as she waited for her drink to get to her. The bartender slid the drink towards Melody, and she grabbed it, immediately taking a swig out of it. Melody noticed an aquatic demon, most likely from the Envy ring, that had sat next to her, her eyes being drawn to their...nametag, they were wearing, oddly enough.

Their name, 'Caspian', was printed in a cursive font, and in a smaller text underneath their name, the words 'H3LLB0RN™ Publishing Records', were present on the tag. She noticed the Envy demon had white scar patches on their face and arms, though she decided not to comment as she heard them speak up,

"So... You're Melody DiAngelo, right?" He started with a small glance towards Melody, ordering his own drink as he waited for her to respond. Melody nodded, a wary glint in her eyes. It wasn't often someone sought you out in Wrath for a positive purpose.

"That's me," She answered in a soft tone, sipping her drink. Caspian nodded before speaking once more. "I have a proposition for you, you're a singer, right?" He asked, looking over towards her. Melody nodded again; her interest piqued. "That's right," She answered.

He nodded before speaking, his drink in hand. "Well, I work for a music company, and my boss is... intrigued, by you." The Envy demon said, though you could hear a tone of barely concealed jealously in his tone. In character for an Envy demon, I suppose Melody thought to herself, letting out a barely perceivable chuckle, but she waited for him to continue.

The Envy demon swirled his drink mindlessly as he seemed to think for a moment before turning to her fully, a serious expression on their face; "My boss wants to send you to Pride, all expenses paid, hotel booked, ex cetera."

Melody felt her breathing almost stop, and she could barely contain herself from squealing like a schoolgirl. Full expenses paid? Hotel booked?! She could barely believe it. She always thought she'd just be a dingy bar singer, not a hit in Pride. But she couldn't deny a part of her was excited. She took a moment to think, not like she had much family in Wrath anyways, and it would be a huge step-up from her current situation. Melody took a small breath in before speaking.

"It's a deal."
