The morning sun bathed Mondstadt in golden light, its warmth melting away the chill of the previous night. Wukong stretched atop one of the rooftops overlooking the bustling city below. His tail flicked lazily, though his thoughts were far from relaxed. The events of the past weeks weighed on him—his battles, the truths he'd uncovered, and the looming journey ahead. But first, there was much to do.
He leaped down gracefully, landing in the heart of Mondstadt's plaza, where the lively chatter of merchants and townsfolk created a comforting backdrop. He caught sight of Amber waving at him from the steps near the Knights of Favonius headquarters.
"Wukong!" Amber called, her voice bright and cheerful. "You're up early! I thought you'd still be brooding up there."
Wukong smirked as he approached. "I don't brood. I contemplate. Big difference."
Amber laughed, shaking her head. "Sure, sure. Anyway, there's someone who's been waiting to meet you. I figured it'd be good for you to drop by the blacksmith. Wagner's been talking about crafting something for you after hearing about the last... uh, 'incident' with your staff."
Wukong's ears perked up. "About time. I've been itching to get my hands on something sturdier. Lead the way."
At the forge, Wagner stood amidst a flurry of sparks, hammering away at a glowing piece of metal. When he noticed Amber and Wukong, he set his tools aside and crossed his arms.
"So you're the one who broke that iron stick you've been swinging around," Wagner said gruffly, his eyes sharp but curious.
Wukong rolled his shoulders nonchalantly. "Let's just say it met its match. Got anything better?"
Wagner grunted, then gestured to a gleaming rod of dark metal resting on his workbench. "This here is steel-reinforced meteorite ore. Tougher than anything you'll find in Mondstadt. Took me a while to work it into shape, but it should suit your... unorthodox style."
Wukong picked up the new staff, testing its weight and balance. It was heavier and sturdier than the one that he got during the first few days here, but it is still not like his Ruyi Jingu Bang. He gave it an experimental twirl, and the air hummed with its motion. A grin spread across his face.
"Now this," he said, "feels like it can handle anything."
Amber beamed. "Looks like it was made for you!"
Wagner smirked faintly. "Try not to destroy it too quickly. It's the best you're getting for a while."
The time leading up to Wukong's departure became a whirlwind of moments that cemented the bonds he'd formed in Mondstadt. His days were filled with laughter, lessons, and bittersweet preparations, though an unspoken tension hung in the air whenever the topic of his leaving came up.
One morning, Wukong found himself on a mission with Amber. She'd insisted he accompany her to patrol the Whispering Woods—"One last adventure," she'd said with a bright smile, though her tone had carried a hint of reluctance.
The two trekked through the forest paths, their footsteps muffled by the soft moss underfoot. Birds chirped overhead, and the wind carried the faint scent of wildflowers. It was peaceful, but Wukong knew Amber was using the time to avoid talking about the inevitable.
"Hey," Wukong said, breaking the silence, "you've been awfully quiet today. Usually, you're the one filling the air with chatter."
Amber glanced at him, her usual energy subdued. "Sorry, I just... I guess I'm thinking about what things are going to be like when you're gone."
Wukong stopped, leaning on his new staff as he regarded her. "You've got Klee to keep you busy, and that fancy glider squad of yours. You'll manage."
Amber frowned, her amber-brown eyes narrowing. "It's not about managing, Wukong. It's about losing someone who's become important to me. You've been like—" She paused, searching for the words. "—a partner, you know? We've been through a lot together. And now, you're just... leaving."
